Ability scores - How intrinsic are they to D&D?

I don't understand the example as Rolemaster has 10 stats. 6 obviously wasn't enough!

Ever had a demon/devil/god show up by its name being spoken?

when we were younger, players would do it from time to time because they were bored and wanted to see what would happen. the result was fairly predictable.

DMs: What are your character pet peeves?

The moody loner, the risk averse and the griefer. I like to remind players that it is a group-orientated adventure game. Teamwork is not optional.

Racial Level Limits: Did you Use Them?

Used to, but not any more. Demi Humans PC's are rare in my humancentric world, and they have a lot of racial and cultural baggage to contend with.

    Is this a good start?

Short's good, especially if you are not going to play every week. I recently GM'ed a BFRPG arc with a canned module, involving a two level dungeon. We played every two weeks, and well, the PCs and their NPC allies were in the dungeon for 4 sessions, with about 3-4 hours a session. Two real time...

The gaming community: online compared to the physical world

Isn't this a bit of a strawdog? I can think of very few industries, activities, subcultures, hobbies, relationships that haven't been affected by the internet at this point. Says he writing on an online forum

Why do you like Fantasy RPGs?

When I started 35 years ago I was enamoured of the entire fantasy genre. Right now, while I still read some fantasy lit, I think a lot of the genre is "played out" so to speak. Or my tastes have just changed. I still enjoy Fantasy RPG's the most though... I think it's a great genre for gaming...

    Given that I like X, it's strange that I never play Y

Is that a SP game? Maybe you are just optimising for the flash game, but in D&D you have other preferences. But maybe, ya, you should try a paladin or cleric sometime since you are thinking about it.

it's just a list. there are other lists. but lists are fun. 5/9 for me.

What was your first RPG experience if it WASN'T D&D?

I was 9 years old. My oldest brother came home from boarding school one weekend and introduced me to his version of a game he just been introduced to: Tunnels & Trolls. He had this colorful map on graph paper, and it was full of monsters, keyed by room. We grabbed all of our 6 sided dice from...

The gaming community: online compared to the physical world

ENworld is a very interesting subset of the gaming community. But the community is large, the internet is huge and I think most hobbyists only play with a small number of like minded folk. I think your argument needs more data. In the physical world I live in a large city in Canada and am...

Help me fire my Chekhov's gun—The Double Axe Wielding Zombie Dwarf

Could you show the gun on the mantlepiece in the First Act before it goes off in the Third? You have a very nice set up, but I'm thinking that for maximum effect you may want to consider some form of premonition that zombie dwarf is coming for PC brains. Kudos to the player who noted the...

Why the thought of D&D 5e makes me sad...

if you had a little more experience under your belt, and I'm not just talking about +3 codpieces, you'd understand that many things will get one "laid". Yes, including D&D.

    Home-brewing Rules

DM fiat with consultation. As long as I have their trust I can do whatever I want. Of course, if I don't have their trust, there is no game. But I also don't want their "consultation" to determine what the rules are ~ so perhaps they can run their own game then ... and let me play in it.

    Why we need new monsters

I think there's too many monsters! I only need a handful a level. Rather than gimmicky stat blocks and new special powers, think of scenario/encounter setup and staging. As long as the encounters and adventures are dangerous enough, and there is sufficient drama in their delivery, I think most...

The Future of Computers in D&D

If you want to replace the DM you'll need a real AI, not a programmed simulation of one. So, no. That being said, people already use Computers as aids in many ways. But as pointed out, this hobby is best as a social experience.
