    Failed promises

Manual of the Planes I really did wait for that one but when I got the MotP it bored me to hell. Dull writing, unimaginative content..yuck! I didnt even have the motivation after that stunt to buy the Planar Handbook when that came out.

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

Yup, A rules lite system does not mean the absence of rules but the simplification thereof. It is always the job of the DM to introduce house-rules only where absolutely needed. If he does not do this it does not matter what system he plays, you will get a book full of house rules shortly after...

How do you determine a "Real Bad Dungeon Master"

Well as you play it there is no problem with a DM having his old PCs as NPCs in the new campaign. It starts to go downhill as soon as those NPCs start to take the fun away from the players with things like - Taking command of the group and literally leading them into adventure - They...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

Heh, sure he was a pushover. But why do you bother? its not your game, you were not the DM, it's not your business. But anyway, your example is an exageration so it doesnt mean a lot ;) Hmm, I can't follow that mindset. All that matters is that the players have fun, thats Rule #1. To me, and...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

I think we had quite different experiences with older or lighter systems. I think our group never lacked group dynamics and cooperation when we played together. Also we never had someone who wanted to "shine" in front of the others. Perhaps we were just lucky with the poeple in our groups :) It...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

you know, this is the kind of stunts (if they worked despite the hefty malus given by the DM) we still speak about ten years later. I find that much more rewarding than having it written down as rules and the DM could say "its not in the rules, not possible". If it really comes down to that I...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

I think it perhaps comes down to the question "Is detailed combat that important to you in a RPG that you want to have extensive rules for it or not?" The answer to that question most of the time decides which ruleset would be the better choice.

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

I personally do not have problems with my DM changing the modifiers because he sees a different situation compared to the last time i tried shooting into the second row (different battle situation, different places where people are at the moment, etc) nor would I have a problem with it as the DM...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

I think there is a difference between making up rules (house-ruling) and giving obstacles that you want to overcome in-game a difficlutly level (i.e. -4 to shoot someone in the second row). House rules are additional rules being permanently added by the DM because there is no equivalent in the...

    New WotC Art Galleries (merged)

Wow, those three galleries are some of the best i've seen so far from the Wizards. Now they only have to abandon that spikey-curley stuff on the armor and everywhere and I really start to like it. I mean stuff like this:

    Insted of Will Save...

I got the idea from a local radion station around here. Sometimes every 2 weeks or so you can phone them and ask about your favorite musician you havent heard about in years. Like "Hey guys, what happend to Suzanne Vega?" Then their music guru will go hunting for information about the artist or...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

I have seen this behaviour only once so far on a player. Most of the time its waiting for the players until they have their numbers prepped for the next round/battle. The same goes for the DM when magic comes into play or other circumstances that demand altering numbers and stats for several...
