New to D&D and becoming a DM

It's entirely possible to run a game with only one copy of the Player's Handbook that everyone has to share, but in the long run you'll almost certainly find that everyone or nearly everyone should have one. I've found in particular that people who are playing a Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, or...

New to D&D and becoming a DM

No one else has suggested it yet, so I will.... as a new DM, get yourself a subscription to Dungeon magazine. Each issue contains three adventures (a low, mid, and high level one), plus regular columns chock full of ideas and advice useful to DMs. From your post it sounds like you're new to...

Erik Mona appointed EIC of both Dragon & Dungeon!

Sigh. I was afraid this was gonna happen. IMO Erik Mona is the best editor Dungeon has had since Wolfgang Baur. Erik has done an amazing job with Dungeon and turned it into a must-have magazine again. So of course his success is being punished by giving him Dragon as well. Dragon's a...

    Reformatting and Viruses

It's also a very good idea before reformatting to note down all of your installed hardware and have drivers saved away somewhere. Even if you're using one of those factory restore CDs they sometimes don't reinstall all the drivers. Oh, and make sure your sister gets a good anti-virus program...

Problems with CDs and Disc drives

The various CD burning software doesn't seem to always be 100% compatible. I've had similar problems with trying to use Nero to read CD-RW discs originally wirtten with Easy CD Creator. Doesn't help that Nero's RW reading extension tends to crash more often than not. If you've got a way to...

So what about Basic D&D? (Merged w/"Basic D&D Set Thumbs Up")

These are absolutely my favorite thing about the set. I would be an instant customer if some enterprising company would start selling packs of these.

Vote for the unofficial DnD Mascot!

Since you said "mascot", it's gotta be Meepo. If you'd said "symbol" or "most iconic monster" or something like that, then it would be the red dragon hands down. If write-ins were permitted then Lidda, Tasselhoff, or even Uni might get my vote instead. Probably Tasselhoff, just because I...

Core rules only for character designs?

"Core rules only" is my motto as both player and DM. Even when I'm playing and a DM offers the option of using stuff from non-core sources, I always take a pass.

How many of you would consider playing an older version of D&D?

With this being the 30th aniiversary of D&D and all, I've considered it. Thought it might be fun to buy a classic module off SV Games and run through it old school style.

Problem with Firefox 1.0PR Browser and Vbulletin

Just out of curiosity, is there a particular setting that's needed to get the WYSIWYG editor working in Opera? I keep getting the Extended editor instead. (I just checked and the WYSIWYG Editor does load and work on IE on the same machine.)

    Sheesh this is getting expensive!!

Me, I like to spread my gaming cash around. I buy from the local gaming stores, the chain book stores, and the internet versions of both. Each has advantages and disadvantages, and since no one source manages to have all the advantages and none of the disadvantages, I'll probably continue to...

"I'll never get to play XYZ": your biggest regrets?

You need a gaming club. We've got one here in Asheville, and it's the perfect solution to your problem. We meet every Tuesday from 7 to 10 pm. The first Tuesday of every month new games start. Occasionally a game will last for two or three months, but that's not common, nor particularly...

    2,147,483,647 bytes

I always embarass myself when I do math in public, but anyway.... 2,147,483,647 bytes is roughly 2.1 billion characters. According to one website I found (not linked because it seems to be rather political) there are 6.3 billion people in the world in 2004. That's as if one third of the...

    Favorie Star Wars Movies?

    1. Star Wars (1977 version). For me this one sets a standard that the others just don't quite reach. Maybe it's notalgia, or the fact that I've seen this one more times than all the others put together, I dunno. This one is just my absolute favorite. Maybe it's the simple innocense of being...

    Lost

The short answer is that it didn't seem to be what I expected after watching the promos. The promos came across as more of a drama about the people with a monster / mystery thrown in to mix it up. The episode I saw seemed to play up more of the mystery and the monster than the human drama...

    Lost

That's the second show on ABC this week that has left me disappointed (NYPD Blue's season open was the other). I'll give Lost another episode, maybe two, but if it doesn't get better quickly I'm gonna drop it.

What do you look for in a Publisher's website?

A nice, clean layout that works in all browsers and resolutions down to 800 by 600. It should be easy to navigate, not require users to download obscure plugins, and if it has sounds of any kind, have a way to turn them off. This kind of thing should go without saying for all websites, but...

Is combat easier to teach with or without miniatures?

Without minis, attacks of opportunity are extremely difficult to use, much less explain. With minis I can explain them (and have people understand them) usually in 10 minutes or less. For that reason alone I think minis make teaching the 3e combat rules much easier.

    World's Longest Wait

Which is exactly why people ordered it from Amazon for $68. :) I'm in the waiting boat. It's not the waiting per se that frustrates me, it's the fact that the original estimate was so very much off and that I've heard nothing from Amazon about availability. I don't (usually) mind waiting...
