    Dealing with an "oldschool" DM

Can the DM explain his refereeing philosophy ("the RAW are just guidelines I use for adjudication, don't base your in-game expectations wholly on them") or must he produce a line item document and go over every departure from the RAW point-by-point?

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

Tolkien considered England's native language to be the Old English from before the Norman/French invasion (both physically and culturally). Tolkien was upset about the Norman invasion as if it had happened during his lifetime. :) His creation of Elvish languages and subsequent stories was an...

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

Tolkien hated Shakespeare (and all literature after 1066). After reading Macbeth, he dreamed of a day when the trees really would march off to war . . .

Has the Star Wars Expanded Universe "Jumped the Shark"?

I just read the OP, and it makes me glad I didn't read any further than Jedi Academy. The only worthy EU stories are the original Thrawn trilogy, in my opinion.

    Gaming Generation Gap

"Teen Titans is Marv Wolfman and George Perez or it doesn't exist in my universe." :) The Geoff Johns run a few years ago was pretty good.

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

I only mean that any player who participates in this game on a hobby level would probably enjoy understanding the fullness of its history and various inspirations. There's no requirement in order to enjoy the game itself. I'm also not taking a stand on the desirability of various fluff or...

Cadfan, what authors and works in your estimation rise above the rabble?

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

I have no real objection to current "pop fantasy" influences coming into the game as new players discover it. But I don't think it is beyone the pale to "educate" newcomers in what has come before, if only by letting them know about their existance and how it influenced the origins of the game...

    Gaming Generation Gap

If I may be forgiven for cross-posting, I'd like to post a link to a video game forum that touches on a similar theme (and may tie into some of the video game discussion in this thread): I tormented my uncles kids with MEGAMAN 9

We better all read The Worm Ouroboros so we can be prepared for this event.

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

And now my non-cheeky response: In my opinion, it's not a matter of "if you are a fan of this genre you must like these specific works," but more that even if your tastes lead you to different preferences within the genre, you ought to have read the "masters of the genre" on some level so you...

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

People know their own tastes. They can decide for themselves what they want to read. Someone who reads nothing but Forgotten Realms novels is still a fantasy fan. A fan of poor fantasy. :cheeky:

    J. Tweet's comments on Swords & Wizardry

I'm not going to necessarily take a stand on the subjective merits of aspects of game design; I will suggest that, if one looks at the original form of the game and the way it plays, the later inclusion of the Thief character class is problematic and created a "rules tension" (that may have...

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

(Sorry for the multiple posts) It warms my heart to see mention of Lloyd Alexander in this thread. My own campaign is a general synthesis of Prydain, Middle-Earth, and the Hyborean Age.

By the way Hussar, you have the large omission of E. R. Burroughs from your list.

A Question for the 25 and under crowd - What have you read?

One of my fondest wishes is to be wealthy enough to send every player of D&D a copy of Jack Vance's Dying Earth stories (The Dying Earth, Eyes of the Overworld, Cugel's Saga, and Rhialto the Marvelous).
