Players, DMs and Save or Die

Sure. Apparently, if the creature doesn't get to kill a PC because the melee specialists dispatch with it in 2 rounds because they are pimped out with ability buffs, damage buffs and AC buffs, that's different from a creature that doesn't get to kill a PC because the knowledge specialists have...

"JIU ZHOU"(or NOVOLAND), Chinese Fantasy P&P RPG.

Wow, the concept art reminds me directly of "Chinese Ghost Story"...and that's a compliment. I wonder if this game will see a better english translation if it is successful on its home market. :)

    looking for one-page character sheets

Well, Goodman Games has one that also has a pretty classic look. It assumes you are not too much into high bonus resolution, though, and only need the resulting bonus to everything. I think it is editable, though. http://www.goodmangames.com/downloads/DCCCharacterSheet_Editable.pdf

How Come There Is No "Wish" Spell?

    Wow...another piece of D&D gone. :\

One thing 3E will probably go down in D&D history as is the "great unifying attempt". All mosters were categorized with one number, all skills in one skill system, all classes got one XP chart, bonuses got a unified stacking system, etc. I think one thing showed...not everything works...

Dear WotC: Please Kill Massive Damage

This made me think back to when I switched from Mentzer D&D to AD&D 2E. I managed to misread the rule for Massive Damage, and interpreted it as "50% of a character's hit points", which usually made for very panicky low-level characters, and very relaxed high-level characters.

Should you be able to dodge a fireball by readying an action?

The principal problem with this is that Fireball is an instantaneous spell, which means it explodes at the destined point as soon as the spell is cast. The second problem is that, even though you can ready a Move action with the trigger "Wizard casts Fireball in my direction", as long as you...

Players, DMs and Save or Die

Hey, roughly 1% of all members on ENWorld have actually voted here, I think this is a pretty popular poll.

why not getting rid of coup de grace?

Heh, if you add replacement limbs to the game, there'll be people lopping off their limbs voluntarily, depending on what cool powers they offer. ;)

why not getting rid of coup de grace?

That heavily depends on the players, their background in fantasy RPGs and different genre expectations, etc. My current group has one player who has had nearly no contact with stuff like that, and who constantly tries to apply real-world expectations to the game, which in turn makes me try to...

why not getting rid of coup de grace?

Right...action points...THAT would be a great way to change coup de grace from being dead to being dying, and a good application of something like that. Escaping certain death to borrow 1 minute for somebody to come and help you...sounds good. :)

People have a funny definition of a "glass cannon" nowadays. And somehow it seems to be okay if a combat encounter is over quickly because the combat monsters did their work efficiently, but it's not okay if a combat encounter ends quickly because the information masters did their work efficiently.

why not getting rid of coup de grace?

The basic problem I have with this whole argument is that it comes from the direction of "Hold XXX and coup de grace in combat lead to unfun and easy death of characters, so lets abolish coup de grace in combat." There are a few problems, starting with the problem of inconsistency. Coup de...

why not getting rid of coup de grace?

So how would you handle a dagger through the eye to the brain in combat then? Auto-crit? I can see how that impresses the tough fighter or the barbarian who have become victim of the Hold spell, yep. On the other hand, it at least halves the number of stabs that are needed to bring down a...

    D&D 4E Paizo and 4e.

I'm sure you have a much better and in-depth overview of the whole business, but i'm pretty sure of two things. 1) If Necromancer produces a 32 page adventure for 4E first thing, it will be everything BUT a crappy product. 2) After Crucible of Freya, Tomb of Abysthor and Bard's Gate, I can...

    D&D 4E Paizo and 4e.

Basically he's already mentioned that he thinks 32-page adventures don't cut it anymore. Dunno why, I love'em, and Paizo's GameMastery modules are a nice example of how they can cut it still, in my opinion. :D

why not getting rid of coup de grace?

Fine, then how would you handle the scene where, in a battle, the group's caster casts Hold Person on one of the opponents, and the rogue announced that next round he is going to take a bit more time and then drive up his dagger up into the skull of that target? How does that work without...

why not getting rid of coup de grace?

I'm not a medical expert, but I simply assume that using a razorsharp steel blade to carve a 2-4'' deep groove into the throat of somebody from "one ear to the other", as they say, on a paralyzed person will kill that person pretty much immediately. The same goes for a steel blade through the...

Try not to let this thread slide into the "badwrongfun" direction. A lot of posters in this thread worked hard to keep that from happening. :)

why not getting rid of coup de grace?

I disagree here. Actually, I think the game would get along without save-or-die effects easier than without something like coup de grace, and I'm damn happy they actually instated a rule for how it works in 3E. One situation, and a very important one, where this rule would be missed would be new...
