Why Did They Get Rid of the Law & Chaos Alignment?

They said something along the lines that LE, LN, CG & CN were hard to differentiate. LN & CN are now rolled into an expanded unaligned. NG & NE are now simply Good & Evil CG is now either Good or unaligned - you choose, ditto LE is now either Evil or unaligned.

Preparing when you have no idea what the PCs will do

Yep, I put the responsibility onto the players to tell me what they want to do. The first few sessions I introduce the players to the world, people & plots. They pick up on what they like. Then once they've finished something they tell me what they want to do next. Of course I mix it all up...

Preparing when you have no idea what the PCs will do

I'd ask my players what they plan on doing next session. Then prep accordingly.

    General consensus on expertise feats

Although I believe that expertise is a math tweak, we have implemented it as written. 3 out of 4 characters have it and all three had base 16s as their prime stats. The 18 stat guy feels his attack is accurate enough for him to fill out other areas of his character. If I had a character with...

Mike Mearls: Build your Adventures in OD&D

Interesting stuff. I recently mapped out a 4E dungeon and wondered "so what?" when I looked at it. It had monsters, traps & treasure all balanced carefully to provide the full variety of (combat) challenges, but it struck me as very boring. Right, so I looked at the known world map and added...

    What makes us House Rule?

I think house rules spring from the lack of rule legitimacy, to put it in broad terms. For example the 3.0 ranger, 4d6 drop lowest etc... These rules are/were so heavily house ruled compared to say the d8 longsword or level system. Some of the rules enjoy near universal acceptance. Now as to...

Monster bonus damage on multiple attacks?

Shudder... I toned the needlefang down to d4 instead of d10 dmg, and they still tore the party apart.

Really, how important is the system/edition?

I gave this topic some thought a wee while ago. Essentially, about 70-80% of the game I run is edition independent. The roleplay is skewed only a bit by the edition rules, and much more by the world setting and player preferences. The combat, character creation/powers, and session prep are...

Clerics & Co. are Not MAD

Hmm, bag of holding only helps somewhat. Heavy armour characters are wearing up to 60lbs with armour/shields, add in 15lbs for backpack, 10+lbs for weapons. Little str chaladins are nearing weight capacity merely carrying their equipment. The personal back of holding is realistically for 4-5...

Clerics & Co. are Not MAD

Does your brother not feel the need to have reasonable str, con & dex? One of our players has a cha heavy paladin but lacks a medium+ ranged attack & can carry little more than his standard equipment without being slowed. His base 20 cha paladin is very strong in many regards, but the above do...

Clerics & Co. are Not MAD

I wonder if those who say the cleric, paladin or warlock aren't MAD, actually play these classes? I suspect the thread title is more a dms position.

D&D 4E Is character death acceptable in 4e? If so, how often?

I find character death to be a major bummer for all involved. The player loses their chosen toy, so to speak. The character story (and all the relating investment by player & dm) takes a dive, or ceases. There's the break-up of game flow as the other characters go about raising them. And the...

    PHB3 cover!

A major step up with the artwork. I've noted the work of this artist in the past, it's a much more pleasingly realistic look. They couldn't resist the female in a tank-top, but hey, it's a half step in the right direction. Overall, well done WotC :)

Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

I had a mixed time introducing d&d to my wife. While initially interested, she flipped through the books & didn't like the female art. She eventually made up her character because I made a point to steer her away from the d&d art, stressing it was not a look that I'd present or encourage, and...

D&D 4E Paladins - The first 4e class to fail

A good swordsman knows the tricks with swords. You seem to be implying that proficiency is enough to declare the concept achieved, when that would only be true in a relative sense when comparing with non-sword users. In short you can not claim your character is a good <insert weapon> master when...

D&D 4E Paladins - The first 4e class to fail

I basically have to disagree with the general direction of this paragraph. I play a paladin whom I want to be a good swordsman. Now to simulate this mechanically I need these feats for this character - not these feats per se but rather each and every relevant feat relating to swords. These...

D&D 4E Paladins - The first 4e class to fail

First up we're talking about a str human Paladin, so the str is already good enough. Secondly we're talking about 'wanting' rather than 'needing' feats. Either feat is on the path to the epic level heavy blade mastery feat which requires dex 17, and many of those epic feats feed off crits. HBO...

    Toughest critter in 4e

Agreed about the Wights attack on healing surges. All it's going to do is make the adventure stop/start. Wraiths look quite poor imo. The insubstantial, weakness, regeneration, and ability to ignore terrain just makes these guys look painful and unfun to play. Actually I think the...

D&D 4E Paladins - The first 4e class to fail

I've played a human paladin and have encountered a couple of issues. Basically the human extra at-will encourages a balanced str/cha split, while the human single stat bonus isn't really enough to counter the class MAD and certainly not for a balanced build. If you take into account feat...

    Toughest critter in 4e

Ah yes, the Needlefang Drake - AKA 2nd lvl 'Hill Giant' swarm. We basically suffered a virtual TPK with these guys: - Scales of War AP - 2 x NFD + 1 x Lurker, 500 xp thereabouts, lvl 2 encounter for 4 guys - close combat scenario, no surprise - NFD trip as minor action, so can do twice and...
