D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

I'm not arguing that the game should not be fun. What I don't see is why level 1 as it has been in D&D to date was not fun. Sure you'd lose the odd character to bad luck but that does not mean you didn't have fun in the process.

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

If they don't include some optional rules to do it you'll need to come up with your own rules to do it. Either way you're having to make modifications to scale the upscaled base power level back down when they could have just built it on a lower base and recommended people start at level two...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

This seems just like starting the PCs at 2nd or 3rd level if you want them to be more durable from the start of the campaign. Unfortunately in the process the option to run the style of game in which the PCs start out weaker has been removed. Unless they have some optional rules in there to...

    Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

I agree with your assessment of the announcement entirely. The way I see it they're making the best of a bad situation. At best the Pathfinder RPG will generate a nice market for them to continue supporting. At worst it fails and they have the option to support 4E, assuming they hadn't already...

    Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

I would think we could hardly blame Paizo for this when - as far as I'm aware - they haven't yet been given access to the final rules as a result of the extensive delays from WotC in finalizing the GSL.

Raise Dead: A nice big bone to the simulationists

My idea of a simulationist approach to things that don't exist in the real world is that you run a bit of a thought experiment to see how things from a real world perspective would change if it were possible. So with the examples of monarchs you start with the premise that monarchs can arrange...

D&D 4E What can change your opinion about 4E?

My initial reaction to 4E was negative mainly because I was just thinking "What? Already?". Since then while I've found myself agreeing for the most part with the narrative coming from WotC staff about the intention and theory driving the design of 4E I've mostly found myself not liking the...

    Change in WotC pricing structure?

It's a shame because I would like to support local retailers. A lot of the cost is probably out of their control. Unfortunately it's just too expensive to do it. The last few years the only retail book store I've visited is Napoleon's (Sydney) for my monthly Dragon and Dungeon. Since those got...

    Change in WotC pricing structure?

I gave up on Australian retail for a lot of things a few years ago. Books in particular. Now I just keep a list and order in bulk from Amazon every couple of months to dilute the shipping cost over a number of items. There's really no way to swallow paying Australian retail prices when you can...

D&D 3.x How are You Wrapping Up 3.5?

My current 3.0/3.5 FR campaign will run its course, nothing special planned to rush it along as 4E isn't on the radar for my group at this time.

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

My main concern with this preview of the Warlord is how the abilities would play out at the table. On the one hand you have pushy Warlord players. Admittedly this is a problem with the player more than the rules. However, I don't like that these abilities empower a pushy player to make other...

    Dungeoncraft - 4th edition style

Thanks for the link to Ray's articles, I enjoyed them a lot back in the magazine.

    D&D 4E If Not 4e, Then...

Unlikely to be going to 4E. Will likely play some variety of 3.5 (probably Iron Heroes plus a limited set of additional material to simplify a little), 1E D&D, C&C, GURPS, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, or a homebrew frankenstein system cobbling together elements from all of the above and possibly...

    D&D 4E A player's perspective on 4e

I hope you've got your full plate on and your buffs running.

Minion fun! What do you plan to do with them?

If I started tinkering with the 4E Pit Fiend I'd go a lot further than that.

Minion fun! What do you plan to do with them?

Not even a little bit. I'm not a fan of the Irresistable Command power. What I had in mind was more like the leader ripping the life force from its minions to power its abilities.

Minion fun! What do you plan to do with them?

I'd create some kind of leader that consumed its minions to power devastating abilities. You either try to take the leader out first while you soak up all the firepower it throws at you or you try to kill his minions very, very quickly.

    D&D 4E 4e Monster List - Dwarven Nosepicker & Elven Butt Scratcher

I don't mind it. It is a time saver for certain. If you don't like the names just change them and take advantage of having the monsters statted for you. No different to nabbing monsters or NPCs from Dungeon or a module that were close enough to what you were after and slapping a different name...

Who still doesn't have a horse in this race?

That's about how I feel. The impression I have is that 4E is going to be a new game under the D&D brand even more so than 3E was. That encourages me to consider 4E against the merits and faults not only of 3E but of other systems as well. Even though at the moment I'd say I'm leaning towards...
