Upcoming AAA/AA CRPGs or story-based RPGs (updated 15/04/2025)

Agree to disagree. Also LOL that meta critic means jack or squat.

TSR Moldvay Basic Set Misprint Box

Think of how much “value” we’ve gained from this conversation! It’s such a cool piece of history and brings back many memories of ye olden days.

TSR Moldvay Basic Set Misprint Box

Explaining the joke doesn’t make it funnier.

You should try to get it autographed, but the people have to sign upside down.

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

WIS 3. Definitely. These gamebooks are like one of those made-for-TV action movies with a nonsense plot, iffy acting, and surprisingly awesome special effects and action scenes. We should also remember the audience was younger teenage boys (predominantly). Not a group known for its discerning...

    Let's play Bloodsword, book 3/5

Hasan was with us the entire time? Or he teleported in just now to kill steal for the XP? Either way, bah! He deprived us of one last bon mot vs. Prince Sussurien Also when fighting the 7-in-1, if you don’t have the Capitalized Noun, you really have to fight it 7 times? That’s awesome!

Upcoming AAA/AA CRPGs or story-based RPGs (updated 15/04/2025)

Mass Effect only had 1 game much like there was only 1 Highlander movie (obviously).

Damn that is a great find. Didn’t The Acaeum used to have pictures of all the different sets? I don’t remember seeing an upside down one though.

Dungeon World Gets New Owners, Second Edition Planned

Can I change my vote in the “when does an RPG die” thread? Because Dungeon World is dead in all but name.

    Let's play Bloodsword, book 3/5

Now now, slitting someone’s throat doesn’t decapitate them, unless you do it wrong. Err. So I’ve heard. I like that there are two possible Capitalized Nouns that work here. I also think it’s funny when you reach these sections with Your Quest Ends Here after you traversed a path. Can’t you...

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

Pointless Polymorphing The Sorcerer's Crown gamebook absolutely LOVES Polymorph Other: it gets more play than any other spell and, as we know, can be the key to get us off Dalris's kinsman's boat and back into the barren Yellow wasteland Marsh where we belong. But let's pretend we take the...

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

The target number is 23 for all four spells. Call it a hunch, but I don’t think this book cares that much about relative difficulty based on spell level. ;) Hmm…. (Cue mysterious music.) Yes indeed. That we can. Counting from when we make our decision on where to go — and assuming reasonable...

What does it take for an RPG to die?

“Dead” feels like the wrong word to use for a hobby that has such a strong DIY component. Ever game is only one enthusiastic message board post or YouTokStagram post away from a revival.

D&D General 2nd edition player handbook class examples.

It’s possible 2e avoided modern (ish) fictional characters for legal reasons. Anyone can reference Robin Hood, he’s public domain, but if you reference Han Solo, Lucasfilm (at the time) might come calling.

    Let's play Bloodsword, book 3/5

Hmm. Perhaps if we show the dog-man himself in a mirror he will be horrified and withdraw? Nothing seems to make sense here so that is my vote.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

Yup, it works. And another thing that makes 4e work even with lower ability scores is that it’s a team game. Someone will be there to flank with you, or debuff the target with a CA-granting condition, or give you a one-round bonus to attacks.

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

The question was asked if there is anywhere in the book that we get to blast people with our mighty magic. The answer is yes! --- If we take the main highway to Saven, we run afoul of a patrol of two (count 'em, TWO) knights. Or paladins. Or fighters. The book can't make up its mind. Dudes in...

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

As I did with book 1, I'll critique the cover art. This depicts Carr's confrontation with Arno and Pazuzu in the cathedral of Saven. Carr wields the Sceptre of Bhukod, accurately depicted with "three large pearl-like spheres at its bulbous end", and wears his Deeppockets cloak, accurately...
