    D&D 5E (2014) Question about feats in 5e.

I would argue that if the game is fun for everyone, balance is irrelevant. You don't play games to have a balanced time.

D&D 5E (2014) Why no 16-18s allowed in Point Buy?

This maybe works if you assume that starting characters are 15 or 16 year olds, but that's never been the case with any of my groups. http://www.footballperspective.com/age-and-the-nfl-draft/ I think the reason is more that it gives you an avenue of growth for your character in their primary...

D&D 5E (2014) Mercer's Gunslinger Martial Archetype: Good, Bad, or Ugly?

If you're paying 250gp per 4 attacks you make in a combat, then sure, but you'll be juggling object interactions until 7th level, and most campaigns have some use for money. The UA downtime rules suggest you could almost manage to get an uncommon magic item for each gun you carry... You can't...

D&D 5E (2014) Does this riddle make sense?

The problem with all of these are the following: 1. There's not really a stake - unless the two tell the PCs what they are offering up front, the PCs are just pulling a lever for fun, right? 2. Since the logic isn't perfectly clear, there's not really a way of getting the answer 'right' apart...

D&D 5E (2014) Mercer's Gunslinger Martial Archetype: Good, Bad, or Ugly?

You are right - I've screwed up my comparison when I added the line "more if you add crossbow expert". Mentally I was actually using it's ability to ignore 'loading' when doing the sums, so there's a bit more complexity to things. Basically, pistols do d10 plus modifiers, and they only do it 4...

D&D 5E (2014) Mercer's Gunslinger Martial Archetype: Good, Bad, or Ugly?

Basically? It's a battlemaster, but slightly worse. You have to prioritise wisdom to get your superiority dice, but in exchange, they recharge if you crit or kill someone. You have access to less manuevers than a battlemaster, you don't get access to grit until 7th level, and don't get...

    D&D 5E (2014) Adventuring in a maze

Based off the map supplied, the town is no more difficult to navigate than the average real-world city. The main points of difference are that: 1) The PCs don't have a map 2) The locals aren't particularly friendly 3) You can't really see landmarks at a distance 4) The PCs are new in town So...

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide to Everything: Gloom Stalker Subclass

The entire interview minus 1 sentence focuses on the ability of the subclass to be invisible to darkvision-using creatures while in darkness, and carries on about how it's scary to creatures that dwell in darkness because of that. The fact that a previous subclass with a different name wasn't...

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide to Everything: Gloom Stalker Subclass

pukunui The vibe I've always gotten from the ranger is that of Longstrider... some group based stuff, some general utility, some self and group-sufficiency. And the mechanics kind of support that, but they're just really poorly done. The terrain and favoured foe requirements for class features...

D&D 5E (2014) Revision for the Blur spell

Blade singer stacks an extra number on top of your ac. One of the major design points of 5e was supposed to be 'no more ludicrous numbers'. Bladesinging makes a ludicrous number while adding little else of value to the game. Ditch it.

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide to Everything: Gloom Stalker Subclass

I think this is a really silly subclass. For starters we already have sneaky hit-and-run characters. Secondly it's a subclass that promotes an attitude of "you guys do nothing, I'll do this", with a side of "no, none of you are allowed to use light sources because that will cramp my class" which...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on this article about Black Culture & the D&D team dropping the ball?

I don't think they dropped a new ball. I think they just continued to drop an existing one.

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Toughness, Inspiring Leader, Healer, and Magic Initiate

Hit point loss occurs over multiple time frames. Over the whole adventure as hit dice are depleted, over a day as hit dice and healing runs low, over a whole combat as incoming damage outpaces available healing actions, over a round , or even in a single massive hit. Toughness helps with all of...

Human Fighters Most Common Race/Class Combo In D&D

Lost mines of phandelver pregen characters: 2 human fighters, 1 elf wizard, 1 dwarf cleric, 1 halfling rogue. http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets Also seems to consist of over-represented race/class combos, with a few exceptions (human druid, elf fighter, human...

D&D 5E (2014) Race Class Combos, Design, Roleplaying and the fear of the new

I think the fact that the stat differences between races amount to what are in the end pretty minor variations. Fundamentally stat alignment with ones class is a matter of offensive combat efficiency... but a fairly dubious matter. Having +2 to a stat is only a swing of +1 on a d20. Even the...

D&D 5E (2014) Survival and Exhaustion in ToA: need a good house rule.

Skills avoid combats. Not moving at half speed avoids the end of the world happening before you even show up. If neither of those things happen in your games... then of course you'll be happy losing them before combat ability. However if time is never an issue, then your exhaustion never...

D&D 5E (2014) Common sense isn't so common and the need for tolerance

Like I said, the skill cap in 5e has already been hit, and anyone trying that in an actual game is still going to come to the 'does the DM allow it' gate, with identical results regardless of edition. The only real difference right now is splatbook proliferation. Let's hope that holds :)

D&D 5E (2014) How would you make a trap not detectable as a trap?

I would suggest that you stop playing semantics because it's not actually fun. That said, I would also ask you why you need to do that. My guess is that you are trying to defeat a divination spell, and which divination spell you are trying to defeat is very much material to the answer.

D&D 5E (2014) Survival and Exhaustion in ToA: need a good house rule.

This has been an issue since darksun. Even darksun failed to make surviving in the desert a sub game that was fun OR difficult to beat. Is surviving a lack of food and water going to be a fun game ever? By default you will simply "carry enough" for your intended trip, because it's stupid to do...
