DMs, Do you allow your group(s) to play Evil PCs and/or parties, & why?

If you're using alignment, and you allow evil PCs, it's a licence to do unacceptable things. If you arent using alignment, it's the usual gaming "social contract" that keeps everyone from playing evil buggers.

DMs, Do you allow your group(s) to play Evil PCs and/or parties, & why?

TPK is probably the wrong word - I should have said - end of campaign. edit: nothing worse than intra-party fighting. Been there, done that, doesnt end well (at all!)

DMs, Do you allow your group(s) to play Evil PCs and/or parties, & why?

We dont use alignment anymore, but when we did, it was always "no evil PCs" because if just one guy was evil, it was a TPK waiting to happen.

The Power Of Print On Demand

More important than reprints of old stuff, imo, is that POD allows indie publishers to put out material :D

D&D 5E (2014) What does "Campaign" mean to you?

Campaign to me means same band of PCs doing various adventures. Same PCs (plus those replacing the dead) is mandatory. A series of one-shot adventures with different PCs is not a campaign, it's a series of one shots with different PCs ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Encounters per day and session time

You might consider Low Fantasy Gaming RPG for a more dangerous variant - long rest 1d6 days, short rest 5 mins, common class refresh mechanics. Fixes many of the issues you are seeing.

D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I havent read the whole thread, but to answer the OP, I think the easiest solutions are: 1. Delete the bit in crossbow expert feat that removes disad in melee. Gain +1 stat instead (so it's a half feat) 2. Add more monsters. Lots more.

    Boxed Text

I dont think there's any such thing as bad improv when it comes to describing rooms etc (the sort of thing boxed text replaces) - its just paraphrasing what it already there - talking like you always do. I should clarify - my earlier comment is in tongue in cheek - boxed text is cool...

    Boxed Text

Every time a GM reads boxed text, an improv fairy dies. Save the improv fairies! IMO the game works best if you use natural speech, and try to keep what's prepped and what's improv a closely guarded secret. You cant do that with boxed text. Players know what's prepped, and what's off script.

D&D 5E (2014) Could we do away with numbers for the six stats?

Yes you could take them out, the actual numbers play no role. Which is why in Low Fantasy Gaming RPG, I made the uncertain action roll - "roll equal or under stat with mods", instead of an scaling target number. Makes attribute numbers relevant again (which is what earlier versions of D&D did)...

Rules Transparency - How much do players need to know?

Yeah I think players should basically know all the rules - or at least understand the rules that are relevant to their PC. In a rules lite game, that's all the ruels. If it's rules heavy, like shadowrun, then they needn't know decking if playing a street sam. If as a player I cant assess my...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it ok to split the party?

We had some 1 on 1 sessions in our recent dark sun game (just one session each player), and it was terrific actually. Had a blast during the session, and then later when we regrouped, telling each other about what we did :D So I think it can definitely work, but I suspect best as a one off or...

D&D 5E (2014) Should short rest be an hour long?

Hmm I have found the opposite is true - you can often rest for 1 hr, but not 8 hrs.... In Low Fantasy Gaming RPG, I made short rests 5 mins (max 3 per 24 hrs), and long rests 1d6 days, but all classes are balanced on the same refresh mechanics.
