    Anime culture and D&D

Unfortunately (to me at least), this is just as true of the subtitles as it is of the dubbing. I didn't realize it until I watched an official release of something I had already seen as a fansub. The funsub stuck with more literal translations, but included a bunch of translation notes to...

    Anime culture and D&D

I do this sometimes too, usually after I've already watch the whole thing in in Japanese with subtitles. It's always surprising how many differences there are, and some of the changes seem so arbitrary I can't figure out why they do it. Of course, I'm assuming that the subtitles are the "real"...

    Anime culture and D&D

It's the same as colorizing old films or cropping movies to fit television screens- it violates the artistic integrity of the original work. I don't want to watch a version of "Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent" with an audio track that Satoshi Kon didn't direct. Also, anime dubbing is generally...

    Anime culture and D&D

I'm surprised to see Paranoia Agent on your list. I consider it to be a genre transcending work of genius, myself. The director's ( Satoshi Kon ) feature length works are pretty good, too. To be clear, I supposed I should point out that I nothing I say applies to dubbed anime. A lot of the...

    Dear Hasbro: about those minis

That depends, are the party trays are randomly packed?

    Dear Hasbro: about those minis

This law doesn't work well for me at all- I choose Cheap Prices and a Large Range of Figures, but the beholder is still $50!

    Ptolus, where's the grab?

Honestly, if you've already done all this, I don't think you're gong to learn anything new in this thread... if it doesn't grab you, it doesn't grab you. But some of what interested me in Ptolus: -I was already a big fan of Monte Cook -I was attracted to the shear spectacle of it's size and...

    Anime culture and D&D

It's weird to say that you don't care for anime, but then go on to list 6 anime shows that you like... I must have a much less stringent idea of what it means to be a fan of something than you do. I think the vast majority of anime is crap, but still consider myself an anime fan. I figure it...

    Anime culture and D&D

Yeah. Too bad "American styles and conventions" in this case can be summed up as "half-hour toy commercial."

    Anime culture and D&D

For me, anime is the easiest way I can visualize many aspects of D&D, especially at higher levels. The "all characters can do crazy, ballz-out, stuff" nature of D&D is exactly why. Counting squares and the like doesn't emulate any specific narrative style.

What do you like about D&D?

The vast sea of pre-written adventures. I'm an adventure junkie, and no game comes even close to D&D when it comes to the number of available modules.

why is Savage Species so godawful expensive?

If you think that's bad, check out the BESM d20 Stingy Gamer Edition. It's not so stingy anymore: www.amazon.com/BESM-D20-Mark-C-MacKinnon/dp/1894525922

    Rpgnow creditcard information stolen

Me too. My wife runs an online store from our house, and it's always surprising to me the number of people she encounters who don't want to pay by paypal because it "isn't safe." They've got no problem handing their actual credit card number to a piddly online store that know nothing about ...

Is there any demand for the old Polyhedron min-games on eBay?

I don't think you'd get any more than the standard cost of a Dungeon back issue. Paizo sells them for $7, I think.

A thing about d20 D&D I didn't like, and still don't know why it was done...

I did like how in 2e (the edition I started with,) the characters all advanced on their own schedules instead of as a group. It seemed more -for lack of a better word- organic. It's a pretty minor issue for me, though.

What is your favorite RPG inspired anime?

I'd assume that this is true of all but the most undiscerning viewers. Like most media, some anime is really good, some is really bad, and a lot of it is completely uninteresting. In that respect, it's not any different than, say, American film and television.

    Dungeon #143

I got two issues of Dungeon #143. One was mine, and the other was very slightly stuck to the top of mine. The other guy's mailing label was hidden in the middle, unseen until I pulled the issues apart. And when I say "very slightly stuck," I do mean "very slightly". Both the mail sorter and...

    Metagaming is bad.

From another thread: This was given in response to the suggestion that an NPC would be designed around the reality of how it will be used in a combat encounter. Do you think this sort of metagaming really bad? I would argue that it would be nigh-imposible to provide an enjoyable session for...
