Generation Legacy the Next Generation of OOC

Maybe we should take it to another thread if we're going to be talking a bit? Bront, uh, kind of asked us to. :)

Generation Legacy the Next Generation of OOC

No idea. I only think I spoke to him over AIM once and that was before his first sabbatical. I think Victim said something about him becoming involved with a woman. "Involved how? Swimming buddies?" :) I'd forgotten that detail. I knew something seemed off when I described the situation. Thanks.

Generation Legacy the Next Generation of OOC

Well I wasn't trolling for it! :) The three alphas to date have been free. Each has shown more and more of the complete ruleset. Then around GenCon they're coming out with what I think is supposed to be a complete Pathfinder RPG-in-a-book for a year of open testing prior to the release of the...

Generation Legacy the Next Generation of OOC

Pathfinder is shaping up to be a fun, flexible toolbox with ample room for customization by players and DMs both. I look forward to its full release next year and will probably buy the beta release in August. :) I looked at a friend's copy of the 4e PHB and it confirmed my assessment from last...

Just stopping by to say hi. Therefore: "hi" :)

    Is 3x D&D a rules-heavy system? Is that a good/bad thing?

I'll go with rules medium. I could do with it being a few pounds heavier. The most infuriating parts of the system for me aren't those where I have all the tools I need to accomplish my goals, but instead where the system just shrugs and tells you you're on your own. The second worst (and their...

    Are you a teacher?

I'm a failed teacher. I was asked to leave my student teaching placement. I didn't hit kids or yell at them or do anything worse. They just figured out well before I did that I really wasn't suited for the profession. I'm not a people person. I like the content (history) way more than I ever...

What's happened to your scrapped projects?

I discuss pretty much every game idea I have with one or two of my friends, so they land in IM logs. Unfortunately, these are the same guys who are really good at talking me into projects. More than one half-baked idea, or just an idea that wasn't really a good fit for the players or me, has...

The Guilty Pleasure TV Show Confession Thread

I watched the first 2.5 seasons of Digimon, but never got over the switch to a whole new cast and universe. I'm not exactly ashamed of it, though. The second (US) season's villain character arc was compelling TV.

    Campaign/party paradigms

Misfits The members of the party are unwelcome, unable, or unwilling to fit into their native cultures and the roles set for them therein. They adventure together to achieve what they could not at home, or just to escape it. The Cursed One and Companions. The flipside of the Chosen One and...

    Rebirth in DnD

That's not as big a concern as it may first appear. Unless the number of living (or ensouled) beings is an absolute invariant, there's plenty of room for the souls of the recently departed to hang around a little while. Maybe the Celestial Bureaucracy is doing their paperwork, or this is when...

    MIC - Broken?

I understand that. It failed. My players still see the same set of items as no-brainers, but they and I have never had a problem with this. So MIC is trying to fix a problem my games don't have, and failed to do so in any event. It's no more than another bag of stuff to my players.

    MIC - Broken?

I don't know about your games, but my players have never really twigged to the standard lot, except for the extremely obvious magic armor and weapons (which were common and virtually compulsory in 2e too with all the monsters immune to weapons below +1) and a stat booster for their most...

    City of Heroes

I played for about nine months. In that time I saw most of the task forces except for the really high-level stuff, and all the strike forces. The repetition and inability to play at the same time as my RL and in-game friends finally drove me off, combined with some of the popular powersets...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

Yes, and 3e is a stunning success at this. It could use a few nips and tucks, but that's quite obviously at least not what WotC wants us to think they're doing and probably isn't what they're actually doing either. Considering they're bragging about ripping out entire sections of fairly good 3e...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

I was with you that far. Rewarding rules mastery is one of the holy grails of my personal design philosophy. 3.5 started a trend towards punishing it with all the renamings of spells. One assumes 4e shall go farther. This is how I know it's not the game for me.

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

They could have done that, sure. They could have created a single-stat game. You add this stat to a d20 roll. If you beat the other guy's d20 roll (plus his one stat) you win. But all simplicity comes at the cost of options. Options are complexity and complexity is options. If you want...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

Could you put some more veil on the insult? Making subtly different rules systems to produce monsters and PCs isn't a step forwards. At the most charitable, it's a lateral move. I don't follow d20 Modern, but I know several like rules subsystems work differently there from D&D and even the...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

It still is, for my money. You seem to be complaining that it's too much work. That's not a complaint about the rules, but about the availability of your free time. If you were discussing something like grapple that might come up in play, that's different. Rules that do derail play are certainly...
