I would literally leave that table.

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

The question is badly phrased and the descriptions in the OP are biased to make it sound like magical funtime storytime roleplaying. If a player saus "I want to throw and rock to distract the guard" they are NOT asking to hit the tree. They are asking to distract the guard. The GM in that case...

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

And it did nothing. That's a failure.

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

Double post. I will add that I think players are usually "rolling for intent" from their perspective.

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

If there was no chance for the player to succeed, the GM should not have asked for a roll.

OSR What's more important for a retroclone?

^^^This. That said, a good game that embraces the ethos and feel of an older game is pretty great, too.

    How Special Are The PCs?

But what about how they compare to a broad cross section of the NPC population?

    How Special Are The PCs?

I am currently preparing a convention game in which the player characters are superheroes in a aetherpunk/magictech city (using Daggerheart) and one of the key conceits is that the PCs (and the villains) are the only "superpowered" characters in the setting. Basically, the PCs will be 5th level...

That's not a function of situations versus plots versus freeform.

I should read that one of these days. I have heard it adds a lot.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

I don't think these things are at odds. At least, for me they aren't. I am a proponent of "situations not plots" and I don't think player authored elements impinge on.that in any way.

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

Honestly, your patronizing tone is tiresome. You seem to think you are the only one who knows how the game is meant to be played, and all things would be perfect if only those tiresome players would do as they're told.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

I don't think so. Many folks have convinced themselves that people that like 2014 but don't like 2024 are rare and just embittered or something. The reality is that there are substantive changes that make the game worse (for some people). We can discuss those things, but not if people just...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

I don't mean to be salty, but have neither of you never looked at a metacritic score and had that impact your decision? If folks want to explain why they rated it a 7, fine. Great, even. But the idea that you don't know what a numerical rating is makes me suspect of your motives here.

Just like certain kinds of magic (mind reading, teleport, etc) the key is to.embrace those things and make them matter. Read Gibson for ways to do this.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

One thing that is important, I think,is that if you ARE going to ask players to define setting elements, you should respect and incorporate those definitions. Again, coming more from an engagement perspective than immersion one,if you want your players engaged in those moments, prove to them...
