    False truisms in 5th edition

Expanded crit range only increases your chance of a critical hit by 5%, and then by another 5% when you crit on 18-20. With an 18-20 crit range that's only a 15% chance of getting an additional die of damage. Assuming a 60% hit chance, how does a 15% chance of a crit work out to getting an...

    False truisms in 5th edition

Like I said, not that I've seen. Maybe the published adventures just aren't very good, but I've only seen the barbarian PC hit its rage limit once. Also, the champion fighter is only making two attacks (level 9), and the expanded crit range of the champion isn't a ton of damage (on one average...

    Balancing out Racial Abilities

Sounds cool. And, obviously, if what you're doing is working for you and you're having fun with it then pay my previous suggestions no mind.

    False truisms in 5th edition

Neat. It hasn't really happened that I've seen. The barbarian played at my table was only once pushed past his limit.

    False truisms in 5th edition

Certainly. I'll go even further and add that it's been my experience that "best" is almost always situationally dependent. I'd say that's a pretty fair assessment. However, I'd also add that if you're running published adventures, you're probably not going to hit that limit very often. I...

    Balancing out Racial Abilities

That's fair. I was assuming their default presentation. Naturally, variations from the PHB-presented defaults changes the analysis. You might opt to make the unarmored AC 12 + dex mod + con mod, perhaps with the caveat that they don't have armor proficiencies because they forswear armor...

    Balancing out Racial Abilities

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed looking it over. You're welcome. I've done a lot with letting players choose to use an unarmored AC instead of getting armor proficiencies. I've let players of clerics have an unarmored AC of 10 + Wis mod + Cha mod to represent receiving divine protrection instead...

    Balancing out Racial Abilities

I understand the reasoning there, and I think it has a certain soundness to it to give a scaled race an AC equivalent to scale mail, but I wonder if it wouldn't be better to give them AC = 10 + Dex mod + Con or Str mod, with the Con or Str mod representing how tough the creature's scales are...

    Balancing out Racial Abilities

I run a homebrew setting and many of the PHB races that I allow are modified in some way. If it helps, this is what I've done with humans in my setting.

    False truisms in 5th edition

Well, it wouldn't be the first time they did something like that. Remember the Legends & Lore articles when they were talking about the design of 5e, and how the fighter was supposed to be the best at fighting? From my experience (which is not absolute, YMMV, yadda-yadda-yadda) the barbarian...

    Exploding Dice Averages

Thank you for pointing that out, and especially for the table. Hmm. That means I'll have to think of something else to do about magic weapons. I suppose I could go back to +X weapons and armors. It makes figuring out encounter difficulty a tad bit more work. That's not such a big problem...

    Exploding Dice Averages

True. I do think it has a sort of immersion benefit to it as well. With exploding damage dice, every lethal weapon can be one-hit lethal, which makes sense for lethal weapons. The chances of that happening are reduced as the foe's HPs increase, but it is, in theory, possible to kill a dragon...

    Exploding Dice Averages

    I generally assume that players hit 60% of the time. So, this would be the average d6 damage per attack of a player: 1-8 roll = miss = 0 damage (40% weight) 9-19 = non-crit hit = 3.5 damage (55% weight) 20 = crit = 7 damage (5% weight) Average per attack of 2.275 1-8 roll = miss = 0 damage...

    Exploding Dice Averages

Thank you for presenting the math in a more easily functional format. I'm surprised the increase in average damage isn't that large. I had been toying with the notion of replacing the natural 20 crit with exploding weapon damage, and people have warned me that the difference would be quite...

DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened?

It's been my experience that TPKs typically happen without my trying to achieve one. Generally, it happens when one or two players make bad decisions in an encounter that I've designed to be challenging, but not overwhelmingly difficult. I can't say if that's so for everyone, and it is just my...

DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened?

I've had that happen a few times. It's sort of part of the learning curve of making encounters with different editions (and different RPGs). One time I handled it by having the corpse of the big bad transform into a dead changeling, making the players question whether they'd killed the actual...

    Shooting down LEGIT character concepts

I've misread the title that way a couple times myself. I just assumed it was a subconscious thing because I fall under the LGBT umbrella.

Am I alone in hating Christmas-themed adventures?

I've never played in one, and never run one as a DM. Like other posters I've also worked in retail and restaurants, and I have a general dislike for most popular Christmas music. I do like the ones with some Latin parts, but I think that's more of my being a linguaphile than it is about the...

What is your campaign balance? Combat vs Social?

My group (which may actually be getting back together, it seems) tends to favor combat, so our sessions feature significantly more combat than non-combat. I'd say the mix is about 70/30. That's not my preference, but my players enjoy it. That said, I try to inject as many social and...

    Shooting down LEGIT character concepts

I agree with your sentiment, but I would still call that "shooting down" the character. I just wouldn't be using it in a pejorative sense. If you make a good faith effort to reach a compromise with the player and no compromise can be had, then there's no shame in shooting down that character.
