Windsor ON 2 looking to play

My name is Dan. My wife and I are looking to jump aboard a 4th edition game, though we could probably play any edition. I'm a long time player, off and on for most of 30 years. My wife is a fairly new player but a long-time avid Fantasy reader. We are both in our 40s but could fit in with...

    Factoring items into balance flawed?

And neither is Still Spell or many other Feats. My main point was that Ruin Explorer was complaining that it was somehow mandated that instead of fighting 20 Ogres at 18th level, 3.x required you fight 2 14th level Ogres. Players get more powerful at higher levels. That's how the game works...

    No more cone shaped powers?

Cones are in the 2.0 Miniatures Game so I suspect they'll be there for the RPG as well. They are 6x6, shaped like this: XXXXXX XXXXX XXXX XXX XX X You can use any of the 3 corners as the starting point. As for radial effects, they are now boxes in the Miniatures game. While the Miniatures...

    Factoring items into balance flawed?

I never really understood this mentality. If you want your 15th level characters to run into 20 Ogres for the slaughter you can always do that. I'm sure you can do the same thing in 4e (or any other edition). Will it be a challenge for the players? Probably not (and that's why you get very...

D&D 4E My prediction for the hot new thing for 4e

I'm much more apt to buy only those class/powers/paragon path/etc. books produced by WotC. I trust their ability to playtest/balance their stuff reasonably well. However, I'd be very much interested in Anyone's generic locations (and/or adventures). I generally agree with the OP.

D&D 4E 4e Rulebook for DDM is up!

It looks like the DDM game will keep double damage for crits, whereas for 4.0 it's just going to be maximized. Considering that most damage from an attack comes from static bonuses with a d6 to d12 tacked on, there was speculation that DDM might go with +5 or +10 damage on a crit.

    Iron Flask loophole

Thanks for everyone's help. It looks like I overlooked that the command word can only be spoken once per day. Now, next time we play, I'll just have to deal with their Identify spell not informing them of this. Meh - I'll just tell them. I imagine, since the Flask is worth lots, they'll just...

    Iron Flask loophole

I'm a DM and I've given my players an Iron Flask with a Vrock Demon inside. After an Identify spell they've decided they'll: Summon it and control it for 1 hour. After 58 minutes have it sit there and have it start making saves to get put back in the Iron Flask. Once back inside, they'll just...

    Spring attack

If that's not a weak position, I don't know what is. By this logic, you don't get Mobility while flying either. Or Dodge. What about Power Attack? Anyways, Flyby Attack allows attacks of opportunity, while Spring Attack does not. As others have mentioned, they do two similar but distinctly...

    Readied items - how many?

We've got a number of scrolls and potions so he's trying to limit the number we can have handy and what would be in our backpack. I can see his point. I can also see only having so many weapons in scabbards at your waist/over the back within easy reach. By the way, a quiver of 20 arrows would...

Mass battles in a campaign -- best way?

We're looking to possibly have some larger battles occur in our campaign where the player characters might be present. What we're looking for is some help in running the battles and what might be involved. Has anyone tried the Mass Battles from the Miniatures Handbook? What about the Heroes...

    Readied items - how many?

Our DM is trying to come up with a limit on how many items we can have handy and how many we'd have to fish out of a backpack (or some other full round action). His preliminary number is 10 items for someone heavily armored and 12 items for someone not armored. This would include weapons...

    Arcane Trickster (3e) any good?

Well, after a hiatus from this game when I ran my own game, we are back. I decided to go for the AT and am now a 5/3 Wiz/Rog. I think that being the "thief" of the party is okay, not to mention a needed skillset we wouldn't otherwise have. The 1/6 (very soon to be 1/7) Monk/Necro has...

    Chasing down a corridor

I had a situation in my game from a couple weeks ago and wondered if we played it correctly. I had a couple Gnolls with speed 20 running away from the party, the fastest of whom had speed 30. Assuming a 10 foot wide corrdor and the gnolls side by side, is there any way the party could actually...

How many spells have you banned from your game?

I play 3.0. Haven't banned any. Just nerfed Identify. Now it's 1 minute per item with a cost of 5gp of "diamond ground marble dust" per minute. Items with multiple abilities just take longer. Spell level limits remain unchanged -- ie. 1 item per caster level.

    Hit point generation methods

I use d4=d3+1 d6=d4+2 d8=d5+3 d10=d6+4 d12=d7+5 With the further adjustment that they can't roll 1's on consecutive levels. That means they are gauranteed average HPs. It gives them an average of 75% max which everyone is happy with. If encounters get too easy for them I can always bump up...

    Middle Earth Gods

Having looked over my copy of The Silmarillion I did some minor tinkering. I decided the 3 most powerful Gods (Manwe, Ulmo, Aule) should have 5 domains and the rest of the Aratar (The High Ones of Arda) should have 4 while the remainder should have 3. Exceptions are Nienna (who is considered...

    Middle Earth Gods

Thanks for some of the tips. I've read The Silmarillion and knew the Middle Earth "Gods" were closer to demi-gods than what D&D would consider Gods. However, they are relatively close to the Greek and Norse pantheons in some ways. Also, Middle Earth had no organized religion beyond some of...

    Middle Earth Gods

I'm starting a D&D campaign set in Middle Earth about 50-60 years after the destruction of the Ring. What I'm wondering is if anyone has done any work on what kind of domains the various Valar would have.
