    D&D General Megadungeons

I worked on Rappan Athuk for 5e and can attest that it is absolutely huge and will also most likely kill characters. The only advice I have about Megadungeons is: make each level reasonably sized, and make sure there's a clear theme for each level. So, you can have 5-10 rooms in a level, but...

Unearthed Arcana New UA Paladin and Bard.

I got the "ancient greek" vibe myself. Odd, that. Is there an "ancient greek"-like area in Planescape? It seems to me that this is probably the most balanced UA in a while, while also being the least inspiring (to me, at least).

D&D General Should a low level character know to burn a troll?

I should note that this is an action on the character's part, and a ranger who's favored enemy (depending on what version of ranger you use) includes trolls should probably at least get advantage. In cases where the trolls keep getting up, there's bound to be chances where one of the...

D&D General Should a low level character know to burn a troll?

My quick and dirty method: Make a Nature check. The DC is 10 + the monster's Challenge Rating. If you succeed, you get an interesting tidbit that might help you, and for every 5 over the DC, you get more information.

D&D 5E (2014) The new sidekick rules are great not just for 1-on-1 games

If my players end up finding what I think they're going to find, they'll have a reasonably high-level warrior sidekick for a while.

D&D 5E (2014) Remember the "3d6 For Stats In Order" Thread? I'm doing it!

Oh man... Back in the day, I was playing B/X, and rolled. Didn't get anything higher than a 9. I had 1 hit point. However, Celsius survived up to level 3, which made everyone at the table go, "Yep, every character you have from now on is going to die horribly. You've burned all your luck." I...

D&D 5E (2014) Rival adventurers - should they be built like monsters or PCs?

Every time I've done this, I've built them as PCs and then figured out their Challenge Rating based on HP + expected damage to make sure they're not crazy under- or over-powered. I do this because player class vs. player class is not in any way balanced.

D&D 5E (2014) Suggest old adventures to be republished (in TotYP or GoS format)

One I'd love: The Great Modron March + Dead Gods. Planescape, in other words. The Great Modron March would lend itself to the Adventurer's League play-style, give a huge swath of the Planescape setting detail, while Dead Gods would be a higher level campaign to top it off.

D&D 5E (2014) How Much Downtime Do You See in Campaigns?

It varies a lot depending on the campaign. My current campaign has seen a lot of downtime, as there was research for the characters to do to solve the mystery (spoiler: they still haven't figured it out and they're level 20 and I've given them literally everything save the "Oh naughty word Twist")...

D&D 5E (2014) Ship to Ship Crew Combat Options

As I'm going to be running 5e Skull & Shackles, I, too, find the idea that the crew just doesn't do much is boring as heck!

D&D 5E (2014) Ship to Ship Crew Combat Options

I haven't actually worked everything out yet, but the plan is to have each PC have a small "mass-combat"-like crew system where they can command them to fight (with rules for PC vs group, etc) or take other "Ship" actions, like raising sail or fighting fires. Going to use Matt Colville's...

    D&D General Biggest DM regret

My biggest regret for this current campaign is probably not allowing one of the players to play the homebrew that they wanted (after I fixed it, of course). I know they're not having as much fun as they could have, and is frustrated by the fact that they can't do the things they want to do...
