Cleave: Give me room to work, my minions!

"Okay, Bob, you dump your bag of rats out and the terrified rodents instantly scatter in all directions. Now, which way do you want to chase them?" :]

    D&D 3.x 3.5 is Anime! Wait, what?

Wayne Reynold's art is as abysmal as usual, I see. Honestly, the guy should be forbidden by Congressional order to ever touch anything vaguely resembling a computer keyboard, pen, pencil, or paintbrush again. I wouldn't say it looks anime except for one thing -- the ridiculous, obnoxious...

Richard Baker on Orcus and Deity Slaying

Definitely a campaign setting thing. I'd never allow a character to kill a god .... after all, Hercules was essentially a demigod in the stories, but would he have been able to take on Zeus with any chance of winning? I seriously doubt it.

    Forcing enemies to shift

The arguments against 4th edition in this thread are complete failures because they are contradicted by the explicitly printed descriptions of shifting powers in the 4e rules that we've been given previews of. They are specious and invalid. Tide of Iron, a physical shifting skill, explicitly...

WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

I agree with this. I think that the OGL stank largely because it resulted in everything becoming a clone of one set of rules, and becoming a huge mass of flavorless, indistinguishable goo. The existence of multiple sets of rules, rather than variants of one hyper-generic one, seems like a good...

Displacement - a bit wussy eh? Mirror image too...

Yes, those spells do indeed appear to be so deflated that they don't match up to some 1st level abilities ....

    Boardless combat rules

I'm going to try using graph paper and descriptions to track combat. If that doesn't work, I'll go to the grid and counters (I'm too much of a skinflint -- and too poor -- to buy minis). ;)

How D&D Was Saved and Made It To 4e

The RPG market is weird and atypical, IMO. It's probably the only market I can think of where the system is what sells, and not stuff to use with the system. Campaign settings and modules don't sell. So the companies are obliged to keep churning out more rules, more and more and more rules...

Joe Commoner, and his BIG AXE!!!

Just got to chime in here with some of my obscure medieval daily life knowledge. ;) This one's taken from a book called "A Medieval Book of Seasons," which is a fairly brief but excellent guide to the various tasks and daily life details of the Middle Ages. It talks about the lives of...

    D&D 4E 4E is like WoW (NOT!)

Well, if they borrowed a few mechanics, and it improves the game, that's all to the good. When people say "it's just like WoW," they're criticizing it by implying that adoption of any mechanics will make it a static world where role-playing is impossible. That, itself, is an absurd argument...

    D&D 4E 4E is like WoW (NOT!)

Exactly. Hearing the sounds of combat and coming to help is copied from, er, reality. WoW takes almost the opposite approach -- if you kill somebody's buddy within sight, unless they're within x number of yards, they ignore you totally. In another room? You might as well be on another planet. I...

Paragon Path names revealed by Jonathan Tweet!

Much as I'm anticipating 4th edition, I don't like the naming conventions for these paragon paths. I also have an intense dislike for the use of the word "warlord" for a class. A warlord is basically a regional military dictator, and I've never seen it applied to anyone who didn't have...

Pathfinder 1E PPP (Post Pathfinder Poll)

Agreed. The Tome of Battle was what basically got me to convert to 4th edition -- since 4e appears to have adopted the system, refined it, and extended it. I can't imagine playing any variant of 3rd edition again while 4th edition exists. That said, I hope that people who don't want to switch...

    Forced movement abilities

This whole argument seems specious to me. The hazards do not exist unless you put them there. You can have a pit without it being 2 miles deep, unlike a bodak, which is either save or die, or not present all all. And unless you absolutely require the most extreme, exaggerated hazard possible to...

WOTC, Scott, Where in the World is the GSL

I fail to see how shunting a competitor into back-burnersville of 3e nostalgia is shooting oneself in the foot. Somehow, I think they'll survive. ;)

    D&D 4E Anyone know a Pro-4e site?

So every thread has to be a venue for a knock-down, drag-out argument about "verisimilitude" that neither side can win? :\ Actually, I think what he's looking for, is a place to discuss rules with other people who like them on the whole, rather than just constantly saying that the new rules...

    Rodney Thompson: Non-Combat Encounters

I like the approach they're taking, and it sounds great to me. However, I know that the hardcore 4th edition haters are going to hate this equally, too. They're just going to say "it's going to ruin roleplaying by tying it to rules mechanics." Of course, their demands are basically illogical...

If 4th Edition didn't use the "D&D" moniker...

Definitely. I'm buying it because it fixes all the things that made me abandon 3rd edition permanently about a year ago. I tried FUDGE, but it was just of meh, probably because of lack of time to construct an entire system to suit my game. I'd basically given up on role-playing games entirely...

Meek to mighty... in a month

Oddly enough, the exact sequence of my story lines isn't fixed, either. Which is precisely why I did away with experience awards -- so the players choose to do one thing and it lands them in 8 fights. If they'd chosen another, it would have landed them in none. Adjudicating xp in these...

    D&D 4E Flavor Powers in 4E?

There seem to be a lot of assumptions in this thread which can be confirmed or denied only when we get a large and concrete preview of non-combat rituals, or when the books come out. Until then, this speculation is, IMO, worse than useless.
