Huh?! Can't be many Dwarven fighters in your campaign. IMC, the Aasimar Paladin and Dwarven Fighter both use Adamantine Fullplate. The Spike-Chain-wielding Barbarian/Fighter/Ranger/Rogue/Psychic Warrior runs around in mithral breastplate, and gets walloped by spells targeting his Will save.

Reasons many choose to ignore the Rule As Written with regards to the Travel Domain are obvious: 1) It is simpler to adjudicate (Is this a magical effect or not?). 2) It is way cooler. 3) Players will always try to interpret rules to their advantage.

Have you looked at any fantasy art lately? Read any spell descriptions lately? Read much feat descriptions? DnD seems to thrive on the blatantly absurd.

The NPC's IMC joining the party, I treat like red shirts. They get to expose all the dangers, blunder into things, open the wrong box, and generally die in nasty ways, after the PC's have taken a liking to them, of course.

Bah, the dude is an NPC... Just have him die at a suitably convenient place in the plot and be done with it.

Its only the Improved Trip cheese which makes it bad. The spiked chain is really by itself a substandard weapon: it does little damage, and has an even worse crit. IMC, I removed the free attack granted from a successful Trip attempt. Suddenly it wasn't such a big issue.

Exactly. Some personal spells are powerful precisely because they are limited to wimpy arcane spellcasters. Once you start granting them to anyone, you are going to see some serious damage occuring. I'd hazard a guess at between +2 to +3, personally.
