    Area of Effect/Size Printable Templates?

Hmm. 30 bucks + postage + a hit on exchange rate? I think I'll source some wire and have a go myself. Fab templates by the way, chaps. Thanks.

Prep work? What stinking prep work?

I do a lot more prep in 3.5 than I ever did in 1e. Back then, my NPCs/monsters were a description, a bunch of hit points, some items, an AC and a THAC0. Most took less than a couple of minutes. Any major NPC would get a few more deliberately chosen items and a name but not many. And I used to...

Leadership - DM's how do you handle Cohorts and Followers?

My players' followers never appear in game. One has them as the staff of her keep (drew Key from DoMT), one has them as the workers and management of a brothel and another had them as the clergy and congregation of a small temple. All nice background, producing a modest income and not...

An Examination of Differences between Editions

I think my players play more-or-less the same way in 3.5 as they did in 1e - probably because, 1. they are the same people and, 2. because I run my game in pretty much the same way. In fact, it is in the same world, 30 years on. Sure, there are differences. In 1e you'd get an item to give you a...

    DR and immunities

If an attack fails to get past DR I generally say it bounced off. If they are only just getting through I tell them that as well. If they are doing fair damage I wait a couple of rounds and give them a spot to notice. They normally realise something is not normal when they haven't cut whatever...

    I would play a bard if. . .

Never played a 3.0/3.5 Bard. Might give it a go.

DMs - What rolls do you make for your players?

Ooh, and I really like the idea of secret initiative. Don't think I'd be able to sell it to my players but I may well give it a try.

    How do you Dispel?

I don't often use Dispel, either. How about this (apologies if it coulds like complete carp - thinking while typing): BBEG casts Dispel on buffed-up PC BBEG makes a Caster level check against the highest level spell on the PC. If it fails, that's it. Next! If it succeeds, have the player roll...

    A thought on Turn Undead

I think I see what you mean. Remove the 'free uses' of Turn and replace them with a cost. Don't really like the idea of using spell slots, though. Clerics are often seen as merely healers, anyway. This might make even that task difficult in an undead-heavy adventure. I think I'd rather limit...

DMs - What rolls do you make for your players?

I let my players make all their own rolls, but they have to make them when called upon. I think they are capable of not metagaming too much by knowing how they rolled. Did annoy me, however, when some of them took to making their rolls out of sight while other players were in the spotlight...

In your campaign, can the PCs "lose"

kigmatzomat: Sounds like you are taking your campaign much more seriously than your players are. My players generally don't 'lose': if the job gets done and some of them are still alive it's a win. Does that mean I am setting them inadequate challenges or just that, as a group, their...

    Large Scale Battles

Two other things you could try: 1. Work it through as a wargame. Divide the armies into units (PCs could be a single unit or be assigned as leaders to units) and have a simplified damage method - opposing units roll their attacks, lowest takes a number of 'injuries', highest takes a smaller...

So I'm trying an Evil Character

Some of the most fun gaming I've had was with evil characters (LE Half-Orc Cleric/Assassin and a NE Bard - both 1e), and my current 3.5 campaign has a mostly evil party. I've found (for me; might not work for everyone) that the trick is to decide on your character's motivations and personality...

Is this an appropriate challenge for 6-7 level 2s? (My players stay out!)

Fair point about the fire. Hmm. Makes me think: I haven't used a Gelatinous Cube for over a decade. Must be time to dust one off and run it down a corridor. With an appropriate template, of course.

Power Attack when needing natural 20

There seems to be a little confusion over terminology: when Power Attacking you subtract a number from your attack roll, not your BAB. Ditto Combat Expertise. BAB is only changed when your level and/or ability changes. You still get to use your full bonuses for a Grapple check, though, as that...

Is this an appropriate challenge for 6-7 level 2s? (My players stay out!)

I think that all except the mummy should be fairly straightforward for a party of that size, though they may well need to rest a few times (unless you roll high a lot or they screw up big time). Let me put it this way; I would be happy to throw those foes at a party of that size/level.

Leadership - DM's how do you handle Cohorts and Followers?

    1. The player can do pretty much what he wants with his cohort, within the normal restrictions of the game. 2. Point buy, 72 points (one-for-one basis). PCs get 76 points. I am considering going back to letting the players roll but that will have to wait until a TPK or game change. Wealth as...

Black Puddings and Damage to Weapons

I guess that if a pud sits on an item for a round, the acid goop that it secretes does damage but, if you stick something into it, you have to be sure to pull it out quick or the much more powerful acid it has for blood/ichor/goop turns your sword into a hilt. Gives me an idea. Thanks, Gregor.

Why don't more people play high level campaigns? 13th+

The PCs were so green that they couldn't see the BBEG's reach extending across the world. By the time they are powerful themselves, they are also a lot better at spotting stuff like this. At least, that is what I'll tell my players when they ask. One other thing I find is that the higher level...

Toughness - How many hit points to make it worthwhile?

I haven't found any good reason to take Toughness but wanted something like it in my campaign, so I created Hardiness (+1 HP per new level) and Greater Hardiness (+1 HP per new level, stacks with Hardiness). Only had one character take Hardiness and now he has 10 HP more than he would without...
