    D&D 5E (2014) Racial Backgrounds

I think backgrounds are a phenomenal tool that can be used to add flavor and depth to a campaign. I would argue, however, that it is not their race that makes elves, dwarves, etc... So alien, it is their culture. I plan on using backgrounds to reflect cultural differences, not racial ones...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do you kill a 10th level character?

Flanking isn't 'basic'. At least not to everyone. It wasn't introduced to D&D until 3rd Edition (2000), and it got along just fine without it. At least not as a core rule, it may have been one of the options in 2nd, but I never played with it. The vast majority of RPGs I have played don't use...

D&D 5E (2014) Observations and opinions after 8 levels and a dragon fight

My two cents: Given that (a) Blindsight (p. 183, PHB) is listed under the heading Vision and Light, and that (b) the subject of Vision and Light is entirely limited to Obscurement, and that (c) the only rule in Blindsight is "A creature with blindsight can perceive its surroundings without...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e fey knight

What Kobold Stew said. I would skip fighter. I would put the 10 in STR, since other than attack/damage you get more mileage from any other stat - and you are using DEX for attacking/damage. I would skip the heavy armor and rely on DEX for defense.

    D&D 5E (2014) How does Surprise work in 5e?

    essentially, yes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Maneuvers to everyone

The problem with the Proficiency aspect, is that most maneuvers can be declared after the attack roll has been made, unless you change it so that maneuvers have to be declared before the attack roll. Either way, you seriously inhibit the Battlemaster: either everyone is as good as he is (except...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do I Understand Rogue Features Correctly?

Nope. Sneak Attack also works when your target is adjacent to an ally.

    That would be the sauce-eror.

    D&D 5E (2014) Replacing Damage-On-A-Miss

Then we would have to consider what using every other weapon actually does, and few of us are even remotely qualified to do that. Therefore, we debate the question of how using a two handed weapon should seem. Which is much more relevant for a cinematic FRPG.

D&D 5E (2014) Does 5E have to be available as a PDF for you to consider buying it?

I like books. Electronic access would be terrific, but I would like 4e style support more than pdf.

    D&D 5E (2014) New Wandering Monsters - Deities & Demigods - 02/19

    Missed it 'cause it didn't have the D&DNext tag. . . . . . {edit} or what Mistwell said :)

    D&D 5E (2014) New Wandering Monsters - Deities & Demigods - 02/19

Deities & Demigods New Article Now we're getting to the good stuff :) I feel that they have to include some world-building - and Deities & Demigods are essential to that IMHO. How does everyone else feel?

    D&D 5E (2014) Replacing Damage-On-A-Miss

Advantage on the Damage dice gets very wonky when you combine it with the Great Weapon Master Feat (take -5 to hit, add weapon damage and STR bonus again). But the re-roll 1's or 2's mechanic clearly makes weapons with multiple damage dice superior to those with only one: d10 (re-roll 1's or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does D&D Next need +2/-2 modifiers?

Might the value of Dirty Trick increase when one considers that it can be used to negate disadvantage? I'm too sleep deprived right now to run the math.

    D&D 5E (2014) Called Shots

Those are indeed worthwhile considerations. For me, a feat would work as it does less to minimize the cost other characters have paid.

    D&D 5E (2014) Called Shots

Nice suggestions - and welcome aboard! As much as I like Called Shots in systems that use them, I feel that there are too many abstractions surrounding HP/AC in D&D to make them viable. Also, any bonus received must be compared to feats/maneuvers/etc... already available to characters through...

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

I never really had a problem with it. Fireballs do damage on a miss all the time. Yes, I know: limited resource, area effect, how could you get out of the way, yada, yada, yada. But 3rd edition Rogues got out of the way just fine. You could fireball a Rogue with Improved Evasion in a 5' room...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

And thankfully, it has evolved :) I don't believe that anyone here has suggested that D&DNext should be/support "pure story trading gaming". I certainly haven't - at least not intentionally. Nor do I want a game that requires competition. I have no qualms if the game supports competitive styles...
