Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Variant Rules

I've already seen these variants elsewhere. I don't care for "players make all the rolls" one bit. The "Constitution as Vitality" has been done better, simpler, and easier to use elsewhere. I used the system in T20 (d20 Traveller) and rather liked it, but I'll never use the Rube Goldberg...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I don't HATE anything, because I long since reached the conclusion that "haters" are a corrosive influence on the RPG community and they should either STFU or GTFO. Having said that, I don't particularly care for having six different saving throws. Three was enough. And I find the initiative...

    D&D 5E (2014) Witch Bolt as a cantrip?

I think my Warlock might give Witch Bolt a second look now that our Wizard has Evard's Black Tentacles. One the one hand, if a target is restrained by Evard's already, Witch Bolt might be overkill. On the other, it might be a good idea to put down them down before they break loose.

    D&D 5E (2014) Can Dragonborn play a flute?

If you've never heard one of these played live, your life is tragically incomplete.

They're cosmetic, and hey, +2 Charisma!

    D&D 5E (2014) Blue Dragon "monster minions"

You mean she's out of her tree? Gone slightly nutty? Something shady about her? I love this idea!

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e--combats are too "same-y"?

Or even if they just have to run away to avoid dying. We've all been there, even if we don't like talking about it. Because running away from kobolds is embarrassing. But that made it even more EPIC when we patched ourselves up and went after them again!

D&D 5E (2014) What to do with players that always roll well

Sometimes you just have to level the playing field. Standard array, or point buy, for everyone. No exceptions. Max hit points at first level, average HP + Con bonus after that. No dicing for HP, no exceptions. That's fair, and no one can cheat. Whoever complains the loudest has probably...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e--combats are too "same-y"?

We've had rather a lot of variety in our combats. I give a lot of the credit to our GM; he keeps things interesting by mixing up the terrain and the opposition. We never know who or what we'll be up against next. Our foes also tend to be very well prepared, using their spells/magic items...

    D&D 5E (2014) Great D&D 5e DPR build

I asked my DM about a Darkness/Blink combo. (My BladeLock has an ArchFey patron.) He ruled that if I cast Darkness on myself, or an object my character is holding, then the Darkness goes with me when I "blink" out (50/50 chance) and comes back with me when I "blink" back in at the start of my...

D&D 5E (2014) Pact of the Blade / Bladelock, looking for thoughts

Hex requires a bonus action to cast, but after that, it only requires concentration, leaving your bonus action free for attacks, so I'd disagree that it's not compatible with fighting styles that use bonus action attacks. As for Two Weapon Fighting, so what if the Pact Blade doesn't work with...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's your favorite race/class combination?

I really enjoy Tiefling Warlocks (blade pact), although I tend to go against type and choose Fey Patrons, Good alignments, and Noble backgrounds. Stereotypes are more fun if they're a little bit twisted.

D&D 5E (2014) Pact of the Blade / Bladelock, looking for thoughts

I'm aware from your posts on other threads that you play a finesse-based BladeLock, Mephista. (So do I.) But not all BladeLocks are the same, and several of the other fighting styles you dismissed are actually useful for some of them. Let's take a look. (Note that I'm looking at the...

D&D 5E (2014) mystic arcanum using lowlevel spell as arcanumspells?

Yeah, this is why I'm a big fan of ruling on a case by case basis. If a player comes up with an interesting idea that makes sense for their character and it makes the game fun, they should be rewarded for that. If they're just trying to "break" the game, and not thinking about others' enjoyment...

D&D 5E (2014) mystic arcanum using lowlevel spell as arcanumspells?

Not off the top of my head. However, it's been demonstrated that I'm not the most creative "game-breaker" in the 5E community, so I've learned to be cautious. Edited to add: I think the real worry here isn't anything on the Warlock spell list -- I don't see anything there I wouldn't approve...

D&D 5E (2014) mystic arcanum using lowlevel spell as arcanumspells?

This probably would not break the game. (And personally I like the idea.) But I think a wise DM would make this decision on a case by case basis.

D&D 5E (2014) Pact of the Blade / Bladelock, looking for thoughts

Look at it this way: the Ranger has both a fighting style and hunter's mark (which is equivalent to hex). He gets the benefit of both, while the Warlock only gets one. Furthermore, the Ranger is only a partial caster; he doesn't have a lot of other concentration spells in his repertoire...

D&D 5E (2014) Pact of the Blade / Bladelock, looking for thoughts

Has anyone considered giving the Pact Blade Warlock a Fighting Style feature?

    D&D 5E (2014) Converting Psionics to 5e?

Another approach I'd consider would be a Monk subclass. Sorry, I don't have a cool name for it. Anyway, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to substitute spells/powers with a psionic theme for the abilities listed under the "Way of Four Elements" subclass. Write up a list, use the rules for Ki to...

    D&D 5E (2014) 8th level Paladin Warlock questions

There's been a clarification from WOTC (I'll find it if asked) that yes, MC'd Paladin/Warlocks can smite using all their spell slots, including the warlock spell slots. And yes, that's major benefit: smite can be renewed w/a short rest.
