    No Second Edition Love?

For what it's worth, which isn't much, these andecdotes mean a lot to me. Henry's experience was much my own, although we tried pretty much every non-TSR RPG that came out from 1976-1980. I completely missed 2e as well. I saw it in stores and really thought it was just a spruced up 1e...

How many of you came close to selling off your stuff?

I sold off a fair amount of stuff in the mid-80's for food money, desperate times. I also figured I didn't need it anymore especially the OD&D stuff as I had AD&D. I really regret selling the OD&D stuff but have replaced most of it. I wasn't going to sell my 1e DMG (very first printing) but...

D&D 4E What would you like 4E to look like.

Me too. Except for prestige classes, nix 'em I say; open certain bonuses, feats etc. to those with certain minimum ability scores instead. When I really think on it, I want an amalgam of The Fantasy Trip and D&D. The first three above being quintessential TFT.

    Realistic Combat

Not sure form the grammer the main thrust here too easy or too hard, but can explain a bit how such critical hit approaches can be made to function. (1) the chance of getting a critical hit is relative based on differneces in level, chance to hit, what have you -the result higher level gets a...

How easy is it to SELL magic items in your game?

Selling? Easy as pie. Of course by law you may have to offer it to the local authorities first, and accept their "reasonable" offer. After taxes are taken out the autorities may have enough gold on hand or they issue a letter of credit. You trust them don't you? Expressing uncertainty about...

Would you be satisifed with d20 as your only RPG? [Ties into RyanD's blog entry.]

I'd be happy to play d20, but as the only system, never.

Do you prefer D20 or To Hit and Save Tables

 Power & Secrecy I don't recall when I bought the 1e DMG if I needed to sign an oath that I was a DM and not a player, but I don't think so. So I don't see where the secret aspect comes in. Also, I've never met a 1e player that doesn't have the DMG or has not consulted one at a...

D&D 3.x - Is It Too Easy To Hit Things?

Those systems tend to overemphasise the critical hit probability, which is not hard to do with a linear combat mechanic, i.e., a natural 20 always giving a 5% chance to critical, and hard to undo without secondary rolls, which can slow things down. If you make the probability normally low...

D&D 3.x - Is It Too Easy To Hit Things?

I like a fair number of those ideas. In particular I like the quoted portion.

    Best Stirge Encounter?

The bottleing and selling of Stirge repellent? Get your Stirge repellent here, come get it while it stinks. :)

What Monsters Are Commonly Used In Your Game?

Lots of undead, in mixed groups at higher levels. Goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears together in the warm climes (but I've viewed them as the same species since I first saw the word goblinoids). Orcs and Ogres in the cooler climes. I'm sure my players would say snakes, lots of giant snakes...

    Battlefield/encounter maps

Zowie! Ashy, that map is amazing, the snow and terrain bits especially. I'll bookmark the page but what did you use to amke that.

    Piratecat ruined my D&D game

Yes there are ways. No don't give up. To some extent the way depends on players in my expereince. If they are of the loot the fallen comrade variety, it's near impossible. If they work as a team of high adventurers that aid each other then yes. In fact, if they work as team stories develop...

    Best Stirge Encounter?

I also like to use them in combination with other creatures. My favorite is the piercer with whom they form a symbiotic relationship. The stirge fix a victim in place and distract them so the piercer has a better chance to hit.

Why do we dig the marketing and sales?

Years ago I could have cared less. Now I run a business and such topics garner a whole new level of interest. Although my business is not in any way related to games, I find it fun now to read about such things in the game context and thank my lucky stars I'm not in the game business. It...

    Descent and D&D

Except for point 2 above, you describe a classic Killer DM style of play. And to the very last paragraph...parley is a tactical option (a wise one at times), but in the olden days I recall many a DM who ran every creature fighting to the death and you couldn't parley with anything. This game...

Could this be the future format of 4th Edition D&D?

Pretty much my views as well. UK's ideas sound very good from a marketing perspective. When it comes to whether it is "D&D" that will come down to what's in the rule books. OD&D had far simpler rules, still D&D, so making things simpler / harkening back to prior editions is not so bad...

    Rent-A-DM

Sold! I'd gladly pay to have a good DM. I almost invariably DM and would love to play with my players. The price above is well worth it if we can get along on a personal level, we can choose the rule system and set the general play style. No problem. We all have far more money than time at...

Need help with a mages guilld

I view wizard guilds like medieval guilds. They control the standards of training and set minimum rates for magic items, spell casting ect., and control the sale of such items. You don't have to be a member of a guild if you are just passing through, but if you use magic then you are subject...

So when should a publisher ditch d20 and develop their own system?

I feel for those guys. Even if they could make the a leap in game design it is probably a bad business decision. D&D has a huge installed base and has set certain expectations of what an RPG "needs" mainly because that is all that most people have seen. I liken making a great game to...
