You've got the original 1980 release, before they updated it to match the aesthetic of the BECMI D&D sets. I really like that version as it showcases more of Larry Elmore's awesome artwork:
My copies of both Alpha Dawn and Knight Hawks arrived today. I have a near mint Alpha Dawn box set to compare them to as well. The Alpha Dawn Hardcover includes both rule books as well as the Crash on Volturnus module. As you can see the magenta hardcover is a tad lighter than the original...
While I do appreciate this new take on Takhisis I still very much prefer the versions by Caldwell, Easley, and Stawicki. It looks like the new artist even took some inspiration from Stawicki's armor.
I feel I can even see a hint of the wheels turning in her mind in that art, as if she just fixed her gaze on an utterly inconsequential mortal and is processing a near infinite amount of calculations as to whether said subject can have any given use that would justify them living a millisecond...
I actually really like her expression. She looks like she is pure, uncompromising evil, completely incapable of seeing, understanding, or caring about the plight of any given mortal, even those who serve her.
