D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

I was about to agree with everything you just said, but then you said the knight couldn't run (fly) without rolling iniative. Thr knight was hidden from the wizard when he took the wand - he was on a lower level in a different room. He decided to fly while still hidden from the wizard in another...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

I see there are 2 meanings they have for stealth, which doesn't help. The non-crunchy seems to be the one used in Surprise; that's why I thought there might be a chance for Surprise when knight turned invisible.

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

Yes, 2 accounts, one on my phone and one on my laptop, started as a result of password issues. I didn't mean to be deceptive and try to not abuse it in any way. If there's a policy, let me know and I'll delete one. I replied from closest device, saw I had replied in a way that would make it...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

Yes, that makes sense. Okay, I can see that. But surely there's a slight attempt at least for the knight to be stealthy if he takes time to turn invisible.

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

Isn't that what would happen in real life? Guys in a bar, one decides to start a fight throws the first punch?

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

The Dispel Magic description states that the caster can choose one magical effect. Shouldn't the caster have to decide and not the spell? If the 1e dispel magic does "not affect" the magic armor that is creating the invisible magic effect, then it seems that the invisibility holds. In 2e it...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

The wizard sees a flying wand and casts dispel magic to stop it. Ending invisibility isn't a possible way to stop the flying wand. I'm talking about 5th edition rules in a 5th edition forum quoting the 5th edition lead game designer. BTW, 1st edition Dispel Magic (PHB p. 47) states: "A dispel...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

I would think the fly spell on the knight carrying the wand would be condidered as much of an effect as the invisibility from the armor. If the DM allows her to clarify that she wants to dispel the magical effect instead of the magic of the wand, because she already specified "stop it" I would...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

It sounds like you are describing Surprise, but from my reading (PHB p.189) initiative isn't rolled for Surprise (it's Stealth vs. Perception). And I'm not sure why "Anyone who rolls higher than the PC, in that case, doesn't know what's going to happen and essentially loses their first turn" -...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

If she said dispel the wand, there would be no effect since the wand is exhibited no magic of its own. In first post, wizard said she wanted to cast dispel to "stop it." I wouldn't allow her to dispel invisibility because dispelling invisibility wouldn't stop it.

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

Thank you for the thoughtful responses. One question: if you as a DM wouldn't ask the knight who took time to turn off invisible for a stealth check, why would you assume the wizard is targeting the fly effect instead of the flying wand?

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

I don't follow the logic of that applied here. Why would the wizard go into initiative unless the knight flew into the room? The knight's action is the antecedent. Without the knight moving first, there would be no reason to cast dispel magic. I asked this before because I really want to listen...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

I have mentioned previoudly I was the flyer. I started this thread because of interesting yet sudden set of events that transpired and in my game. I don't feel a need for my character to succeed, am just hoping for some intelligent analysis. I don't understand why if other characters have no...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

IRL the combat with the wizard vs. the mummy had just finished, ending iniative. But I don't think that matters: the flyer took his action (in or out of combat) to fly 100' over the wizard and out of the dungeon.

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

Yes, the dispel would have been cast during a combat action. But the invisible flyer began his stated 120' flying action without the wizard or any of the rest of his party were aware what he was doing or where he was. There was no oposition until dispel magic was cast, but that takes an action...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

Having the DM suggest the wizard move before casting I would say would be a DM choice, not a "should," especially since the wizard is at least 5th level since she is casting Dispel Magic. You say the DM "messed that up" by not interupting a PC's movement to roll initiative. This is a sincere...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

If you don't want to read the whole thread, I don't blame you, but I haven't changed anything. The wizard never moved, wanted to dispel in order to stop the wand.

She could move or do a lot of other things, but that's a different scenario.

D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

There has been some disagreement regarding "clear path" vs. the spell's only stipulation "within range."

    D&D 5E (2014) Polymorph and a Box

I'm not sure why you feel suffication should be more deadly than a wallop if great axe. This is why I suggested fly/drop falling damage of 20d6, to carry over to otiginal form, repeat drop if necessary. The polymorph party member is something we use regularly.
