Yes, the designers do play; they often stream games. It seems not everyone's (feelings for the) game is the same as yours. Monster damage can be definitive or it can be within a range; including crits only increases the range of predictability.

Interesting thought: My first reaction would be "Of course you couldn't change a creature's age." But some creatures -- say dragons -- have stat blocks for different ages of that creature. I can't think of similar stat blocks for humanoids, but just because a stat block doesn't exist doesn't...

I don't know how common it is, but both being scammed and having items available before kickstarter have happened to me.

The most frustrating thing I have found, except for being outright scammed, is that I have found a few items I have Kickstartered and awaiting deliver timetables yet the same exact item was currently available on Amazon for cheaper and with next day delivery.
