I'm more willing to believe that it is a clueless author than WotC financing development of two concurrent-yet-separate services that launch within months of and compete with each other.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out from a "what makes a Kickstarter successful" perspective. I'm curious how much of 7th Sea's success was excitement and how much was the great deal it was (Print Core Book + ALL the pdfs for $60). Discovery/Destiny definitely has the excitement...

Is there supposed to be a point or call to action in there somewhere, or was it meant to just be a hot take with no substance?

People complain when you can't buy pdfs for D&D. Then they deliver something with more functionality than pdfs, and people complain about the price.

Not to mention pretty direct competition from Shadow of the Demon Lord, which a lot of players are now using to scratch that Old World itch.

I hope they are more inspired by 1st and 2nd and not just rehashing them (which a lot of fans seem to want). Second edition was pretty much complete, so no need to do that over again even with a handful of tweaks.

Have they said whether they will be using Pathfinder's rules, or is this a new rule-set?

This is the first entry that I read and thought, "I want to play that."

They got the Yawn part right. I thought this is what DMs Guild was for.

"A new preview gives a glimpse at three new bounty hunter specializations: Stand and Fight, The Chase is On, and You Can’t Hide." You just listed the paragraph headers rather than the specialization names. The actual specializations are: Martial Artist, Operator, and Skip Tracer.

It arrived in port mysteriously with no crew. The only one onboard was a single madman locked in the hold who screams at all hours about staying out of "the shadows in the angles."

Plus, while Dark Powers checks are great for your personal campaign, I don't think this story is supposed to be about the PCs slowly becoming monsters. Having them here would just run counter to the module's story.

I don't understand why there would be a bunch of character options. If the conceit is that the characters are drawn into Barovia from outside, then those options would all be non-Ravenloft stuff.

With all the unlocked material, backing it is such a great deal. $60 gets you the physical core book, as well as PDFs of the core + the first SIX supplements (around 200pg. each), along with electronic versions of maps, novels, villain and hero cards, and a city supplement.

It's a good module for a specific playstyle. For other playstyles, not so much. It obviously doesn't fit John's style and I think he makes it clear why.

The Polygon article linked in the article stated (emphasis mine): "This new version of the story will be more than 250 pages long, and include everything Dungeon Masters will need to get their players situated in the kingdom of Barovia."

The text says it ends if you use "two hands to make an attack with a weapon". I read that as attacking with a two-weapon, or the two-handed option for a versatile weapon. At the very least you could hold a weapon in your off hand and not use it.

Just weird that they would offer two categories like that when they bundle up other games.

Why is Dungeon World separated from "Apocalypse World System" Games? It seems like an arbitrary split that puts both entries further down the list.
