D&D 5E (2014) A campaign that lasts an entire (in-game) lifetime... what would this look like?

The One Ring does this by simply suggesting that there should be long gaps between adventures, so each of those adventures is super meaningful (a bit like Bilbo dining out on his one big excursion for his entire life, basically). So you just establish that the characters have lives that aren't...

    Fantasy "The Boys" for SWADE

@Reynard That's a great blurb! Here's a version cut down to 392 characters without spaces, and 461 with. Note that using em-dashes, no spaces, instead of double-hyphens with spaces on both ends, helps a bit. On a Mac you press Shift+Command+hyphen to do that longer em-dash (not sure if it's a...

    The ENnies Announces 2022 Nominees

Nope. I said that "a lot of this list seems like a contest for who could nominate the most indie of indie games." There are some games nominated that I've read and really liked, so don't try to twist what I wrote into a blanket dismissal. But just like people can gripe about Oscar or Emmy snubs...

    The ENnies Announces 2022 Nominees

Have I read every single game nominated? Is that your question? C’mon, are we really going to do this?

    The ENnies Announces 2022 Nominees

That'd be my guess exactly. And yet, that would be stupid and punitive on their part. Free League had an insanely good run there, with TOR 2e and Twilight 2000 4e. To toss them nothing but an interior art nom is just wacky. Between that and dismissing Impossible Landscapes, one of the...

    Fantasy "The Boys" for SWADE

Looks great. Only thing that seems missing—and I realize it's hard to fit this in, given the character limit—is who/what the PCs will be playing. Regular people? Descendants of monstrosities? Etc.

Jamison Stone & Satine Phoenix's Apotheosis Studio To Wind Down [UPDATED]

Yeah, not sure how this accusation keeps getting ignored or lumped in with the usual, surly “Kids these days…Bosses are supposed to be horrendous monsters. It’s good for you!” takes.

best 'shadowrun' supplements before 6e for fluff?

Bug City is hall of fame stuff. But I'm a little biased, since I think post 2e Shadowrun lore kind of goes off the cliff. You could do an entire campaign during or related to Bug City though.

    The ENnies Announces 2022 Nominees

Maybe it didn’t qualify, given that the print edition isn’t out yet? If it did qualify though, and just got snubbed, this year’s looking even sillier.

    Million Dollar TTRPG Kickstarter Club

Doesn't look like this one will hit $1M. There might be other 3PP 5e projects on the horizon that aren't on my radar, but right now it's looking like lean times for RPG blockbusters on KS. Which is probably good news for Zinequest next month!

Also, the only nomination for Impossible Landscapes is for layout? Yikes, man.

My god, it's full of Free League snubs!

Help me "get" Forged in the Dark.

Yeah I think PbtA is probably a much better choice for a sex comedy game than FitD. @Reynard In addition to Monsterhearts you might want to check out the sex/intimacy-related moves in Apocalypse World and Thirsty Sword Lesbians. I think the latter takes most of its romance-related mechanics from...

D&D General Rant: Sometimes I Hate the D&D Community

I get into my fair share of tussles here, but I've also benefited from lots of amazing insights and advice, and gotten some much-needed and appreciated support. You don't have to like the idea of it as a community, but it is if you want it to be.

RPG Crowdfunding News – Epic Encounters, Wasteland Sagas, By This Axe, and more

This volume of Abyss of Hallucinations confuses me just as much as the first one, but I also want it very much.

What is and isn't Space Opera?

Just Google Lensman. It’s the foundational and defining text for the genre, and everything that’s followed either directly or indirectly drew from it. ETA: I don't actually recommend reading the Lensman books, necessarily—I find all of that author's stuff lifeless and all tell, no show—but...

Help me "get" Forged in the Dark.

@Reynard Echoing others that five is a lot, but I think one way of handling it is to do what other games/systems passively discourage—split the party, often and aggressively. FitD and PbtA both excel at that, since resolution is fast, including and especially for combat, and by constantly...

What Fits Into a Two-Hour Adventure?

I tried to run a one-shot last night (which is going to have to be a two-shot), and one thing I always forget is how much time is eaten up by descriptions of travel and new environments, as well as quest-giver NPCs. It's such a natural instinct, at least for me, to have travel and discovery as...

What Fits Into a Two-Hour Adventure?

I think the less emphasis the system has on traditional, zoomed-in combat, the more you can do in a couple hours. You could run a corker of a Trophy Dark session in that time. But D&D or PF? If a fight breaks out you might as well call the game right there.

Help me "get" Forged in the Dark.

Scum and Villainy suggests up to 20 sessions. My sense is that, because of the faster pace of FitD games in general, and SaV in particular, you might feel like you've gone as far as you want to at that point. There's so much more total narrative per session, and you might actually feel like you...
