D&D Encounters: Admission charge or free?

The one I am going to charges a quid, but they have always done so for their "game nights". Just so happens that they included D&D Encounters in it.

Can we go back to smaller books?

Grab the online SRD and layout it under 200 pages if can. Also be thankful that D&D books ain't as large as the latest HERO books. Those are scary.

Can we go back to smaller books?

Fewer pages means fewer rules, or really really small fonts. D&D has been going up in complexity and the only way to go slim is to go back to rules-light. I agree Pathfinder is rather thick, but considering it's two books in one, it's good value.

    Who Else likes the Cantina?

Thanks for answering. I do play as myself as well, and always thought I have to put on a pretentious identity when playing a really weird race. I guess if I play a human like Han Solo, I can play a shardmind "greedo shooting" scoundrel as well.

    Who Else likes the Cantina?

I never seen anyone roleplay other races besides the usual races, at least in my area. The usual races all are played with the usual stereotypes (Scottish dwarf, mischievous halfling, Legolas elf). I am wondering with all the new races and people here getting excited with them, how do you...

    Who Else likes the Cantina?

Cantina is good for scifi where it originated. The concept is all species from every galaxy in one place. For fantasy? My tavern filled with wildens and shardminds having drinks together isn't really my cup of tea. There was a part where I read about D&D world description where the high races...

Weird design decision in Dragon Age

I remember Pramas suggesting 10 points to distribute amongst the attributes but cannot go higher than 4.

D&D Essentials? I might actually play this game.

4e is simplified enough. With exception of the complicated powers and feats, the Redbox will have almost the same mechanics as the corebook. Races will work the same and classes will have simple powers. Being an experienced gamer, you should have no problems digesting the PHB. Just ignore the...

    What defines "D&D?"

Yup, it's mostly the rules. However the feel and playstyle of the game does contribute to the definition to a degree. I think no rpg does dungeon crawl as good as D&D. - Which also agrees with what Mearls said about making D&D good at what it does. I feel the class/level system, Hit vs AC, 6...

the Red Box Basic set covers 1st to 3rd level.

Doesn't WOTC already have this for sale?

the Red Box Basic set covers 1st to 3rd level.

Mentzer could fit levels up to 3 or more due to only having to adjust the level up table. 4e however needs tons of space for the powers. Even if we are comparing extra spells in Mentzer box, it is still little due to limited spell list.

the Red Box Basic set covers 1st to 3rd level.

Don't forget BD&D has tons of modules (the B-series) for levels 1-3.

    I'm getting Edition War fatigue

I actually thought the edition war was over since it's been almost 2 years since 4e came out.

4e increased my DM prep time...

I started playing 2e and my prep time was mostly story and plot. I want an enemy and I can just stat one up according to the player's level. I did the same when I converted to 3e. Yes, I cheated in 3e where I never used the monster building rules. I just eyeballed HP AC and damage that was...

    The Truth About 4th Edition.

That reminds me, if ever a 4e based video game comes out, I want to see how different the fighter's marking is compared to WOW's taunt from a casual player's viewpoint who doesn't know the inner mechanics. I am sure an AI has to be implemented for the monster to react to the mark, since no human...

4E, Ashen Crown, and Dungeon Crawls

YES! I was thinking almost the same thing. Say you enter a a barrack and start fighting goblins, but at round 2, the goblins at the nearby room will hear the noise and will enter combat. Perhaps Wizards can come up with rules for waves in encounters. Like you example states, a 6 room-6...
