    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

Cool. Ehhh.... It IS that, but it's not ONLY that. PART of what it did was try to roll back some of the more radical changes of 4E and appeal to the OSR and older crowd. But I think it was also aiming to be more accessible for younger gamers and a "bridge" edition for all D&D fans. In the...

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

No, not specifically. Whizbang referenced a few specific hugely-successful-in-pop-culture fantasy properties as examples of fantasy IPs which are contemporaneous with 5E and likely reference points for modern (younger than us) D&D buyers and fantasy fans. (Side note: As a tiny piece of...

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

Yikes. But yeah. As mentioned earlier in the thread, it's a piece of D&D art which can capitalize on a new Taylor Swift reference, and it comes from a Radiant Citadel adventure. So it is indeed selling D&D.

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

The original Avatar: TLA show ended in 2008; Minecraft and League of Legends were both released in 2009. So they would have been recent prominent and pop culture the entire time 5E was being developed... The Firebird mentioned a couple of other hugely popular touchstones of modern fantasy-...

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

I'm not sure I 100% agree with that. I think there are SOME elements of Arthurian knights in armor and pop-historical medieval European/early modern-based works in the mix. The weapon, armor, and equipment lists are still mostly centered there, for example.

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

D&D has become increasingly self-referential, but when every edition of D&D has come out, its art, and the technology and fashion depicted in that art, has been significantly influenced by the contemporary cultural milieu (as Gygax might put it). :) D&D is "the generic fantasy adventure/RPG"...

    Our Physical Fitness

I don't want to jinx it, but I'm feeling increasingly normal so far today. Between the double Epley maneuver yesterday, getting off the meclizine (which is great for vertigo-induced nausea, but muffles the neural response from the non-impaired vestibular organ as well and creates its own weird...

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

Jeff Dee doing 70s bell bottoms and (sometimes exaggerated versions of) mid-century superhero boots* on D&D characters is definitely a product of the time which I just accepted as part of the visual language of heroes. Especially since I was regularly reading comics in the 80s at the same time...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

We always rolled ability scores (with, of course, generous house rules) in 3.x. The biggest factor in "character builds" IME was prestige classes. Each had prerequisites, from as simple as a certain race to a minimum BAB or caster level, to more in-depth like having specific feats or x number...

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

Yup. It's funny, though, in retrospect realizing that since casters got so nutty at higher levels, perhaps prestige classes which slowed down spellcasting advancement might have made for a better game experience if they were widely (read: universally) used. Of course, it's totally...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

There's definitely a cognitive bias a lot of folks fall into where they study something really in-depth and then mistakenly think their expertise confers superior understanding of another field entirely. There's also Dunning-Kruger, of course.

    Our Physical Fitness

Vertigo has still been derailing my exercises since last Monday. :/ Thankfully meds have kept nausea under control, but I still feel too lightheaded and off-balance to do weights or even my calisthenics. I did see a doc this week and I've got a vestibular PT session this afternoon, so...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

The chain I remember from childhood is Roy Rogers. They had burgers and fried chicken, and there was one in the shopping plaza just a few blocks away when we were living outside Philadelphia the years I was 12-14. Occasionally our folks would let my little brother and me walk over there (which...

D&D General Correspondence with David Trampier and A History of His 1985 Attempt to Crowdfund a Wormy Anthology

💯 It's a crying shame that the original crowdfunding effort didn't get enough support and the story couldn't be finished. I guarantee that if Tramp had somehow retained interest and desire into the Kickstarter era a re-try would have garnered a ton of support. Who knows how many thousands...
