D&D 5E (2014) Why is WOTC so awful at providing digital content?

Surprise is right! No hype, just a promising looking day one product launch. Is this becoming the norm? Where's my hype train!? :p

FANTASY GROUNDS Virtual Tabletop's D&D License!

First off, thanks for stopping in and answers questions here. It says a lot about your operation. :) With the DMG not yet implemented, how do things like treasure and traps work? For example, if you were running a custom campaign rather than Lost Mine of Phandelver (which has its own treasure...

    D&D 5E (2014) Training Wheels

Having played 5e Lost Mine of Phandelver and now DMing a homebrew, the low level deadliness is certainly an issue. Be ready for one hit kills. I'm worried the healing river ain't going to save them, as the big issue I've found is one hit kills. A CR 1 bugbear critical is insanely...

FANTASY GROUNDS Virtual Tabletop's D&D License!

From what I can tell, the most straightforward "bulk" option for a group is Ultimate License $149 + D&D Complete Core Class Pack $49.99* + D&D Complete Core Monster Pack $49.99 = $248.98. Ultimate states that "One License Covers All Players In a Group" on the features checklist. So if you have...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e is fantastic. Just a topic of appreciation and some forum analysis.

I do hope those who might be devs look past the gadflies and see the positives of this community. The current edition is fantastic. The posts tend to tear the game apart, but "looking under the hood" is what forums like this are all about. I'm surprised how much time I spend here discussing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Designing a fantasy army in 5th

Other than use a mass combat system, I would focus the party on "high value targets" during the fight. The PCs become an elite strike team. Have them disrupt the enemy supply lines, kill key enemy general and other NPCs. Some of the "big bads" I always include in an army attack: a commander, a...

Dragonlance Would you allow Kender outside of Dragonlance?

I would probably not introduce it on my own. If a player really wanted to play one, I'd find a way to introduce kender into the setting. Now I'm picturing 4e era FR with the Spellplague pulling in a society of kender rather than genasi. :]

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Modifying Classes & Spell-less Rangers

Calling the ranger example "Ranger with No Spells" is driving me crazy. :erm: Some primal part of me just finds it unsatisfying for no good reason. Call it "Battle Ranger", "Grounded Ranger", or "Traditionalist Ranger." A name! Even if it's just a "what if" example, give it a proper name! LOL

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Multiverse as setting - do you do it?

D&D Multiverse as setting - do you do it? 1) What I'm getting at is: Do you or your group usually treat your D&D campaigns as existing within one giant shared universe? 2) If so, do you use the classic Spelljammer/Planescape approach? I.e., your Toril, Athas, Krynn, homebrew worlds, etc. all...

Jeremy Crawford On The Dark Side of Developing 5E

I'm throwing in on this theory. A "Stargate" approach to D&D, where all these different worlds with their own niches exist in one big connected universe. The Great Wheel is back as the foundation of this, because it has this devoted following thanks to quality of the Planescape setting. But even...

D&D 5E (2014) So what are the (other) ranger archetypes?

One memorable ranger archetype I've created was a 3e prestige class for an elven sentry. The fought from the treetops with bows, guarded against intruders in the forest realm of the elves, and excelled at tracking.

    D&D 5E (2014) Short rests -- how often in a day?

Yeah, I'm certainly not holding it against them. I'll give them more patrols and urgent crises down the road to keep them on their toes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Parchment vs Papyrus

If you are looking for a region that would use papyrus, I would imagine the Al -Qadim setting within Toril would be a good place to start. It has broad mythical Arabian themes.

D&D 5E (2014) How did you handle the Aarakocra?

I have not had a player ask to run one. If they did, I would probably allow it if there was a concept behind it, rather than a munchkin approach to it.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is WOTC so awful at providing digital content?

Small time software coders that hit it big help skew expectations. I'm thinking of examples like Notch(Minecraft) and Collosal Order(Cities: Skylines). Fan projects that are impressive labors of love do too. Kobold.Club is crazy good and could be a pro product with a little visual polish. Maybe...

    D&D 5E (2014) Short rests -- how often in a day?

Yeah, I've having to adopt this more moving forward. I have an upcoming large dungeon crawl which has chance of repopulation charts that are triggered by short or long rests. Its formatted like this: Floor 1: short rest 25%, long rest 90% - roll on Random Encounter chart A Floor 2: short rest...

    D&D 5E (2014) Short rests -- how often in a day?

I'm finding that unless there's timed urgency within the game, the veteran players in my group will short rest after every single fight, just to get back encounter powers.

Chris Perkins: Reintroducing Settings in Ways that Surprise People

I think it is more likely that the second and third thing might be the same thing. You are probably right. But perhaps that WotC has become an Office Space hell where dreams of dragons and flying castles are cast aside, and employees attend meetings all day about fire safety, breakroom...
