D&D 5E (2014) The Joy of Wild Sorcery - Post your amazing surge stories here!

Fighting on the ship in Shadows of the Moonsea. The tank was out of hp. Used tides of chaos, turned myself blue. Another tides of chaos, got HP regeneration of 5 hp per round. cast Sleep and put down 5 kobolds, and got a surge giving a 5th level magic missile that killed both the pirate captain...

    D&D 5E (2014) Most annoying / awesome magic items

I am personally a fan of +0 items. Things like a quarterstaff that can cast Light on itself for 1 hour upon command and counts as a magical weapon, but offers +0 to hit and damage. Or a Breastplate made of Bulette shell that is wearable by a Druid but a normal breastplate stats-wise. If the...

Adventurers League, Home Play, and Public Play for Out of the Abyss characters

Michael, Seems to me you'd be better off not playing with the "clique" at your FLGS. Find a different store, find a group on Fantasy Grounds, find a group of people you get along with in person. Questions about what is and is not legal are beside the point if their standards for good behavior...

    new Dragonborn Warlock

A familiar with a fly speed is super for recon and placing a tail on someone- you can tail from so far back they'll never pick up they're being tailed. Identify can largely be skipped: magic items let you know what they do with just a short rest attunement and potions you can figure out with a...

Taking a stab at the nonmagical bard

I would suggest allowing the player to take a Fighting Style on the same schedule as Expertise. Gives a lot of Fighterish utility and would help offset the loss of magic. Without something like that, this option seems pretty unattractive: too much taken away and not enough put in its place.

    Adamantine and Mithral

But the Druid has proficiency with Medium armor. Normally, all medium armor is all or mostly metal. I put those two facts together, and I see a story hook, an adventure in the making, not a reason that a druid will never have a breastplate or half plate of any kind. It's a potential challenge...

    Adamantine and Mithral

Nevermind then. I would think it would cost gold and downtime, have zero renown or xp, but if it can't go on the sheet and I never had to RP for searching for it and getting it, it's not RP flavor, it just kinda feels like lying. Additional point in favor of home game to me. Wanting things like...

    Adamantine and Mithral

That's wonderful! Why isn't that better known, that's totally something to do with a friendly DM as a side mission some day. I would MUCH rather work to attain it anew than retcon the souvenier, and if it costs me a hundred gold in healing potions, so what, the gold is kind of starting to pile...

    Adamantine and Mithral

So by that logic since my fighter started with chain mail and gains a mechanical advantage by buying splint, that's a problem. If said druid wants better armor and is prepared to quest for materials, and pay a multiple of base to get armor(bulette carapace breastplate for example) they have...

    Adamantine and Mithral

And I specifically said it had no mechanical advantage, it was RP flavor and EXTRA gold. This is not hypothetically a +1 shield (my example was a shield, not plate armor). This whole area of +0 flavor items is underexplored in the adventures I've seen. If I went to that trouble to make a...

    Adamantine and Mithral

Continuity paradox is a concern, but so is the gutting of character motivation. I started a new character yesterday, a wild magic sorcerer who had not yet realized he had this gift. Playing the realization moment was fun, we were doing all 5 parts of DDEX1-1. At creation(I wrote him up 2 months...

    Adamantine and Mithral

Yeah, this really isn't a good fit. In curbing the minmax optimization(which you all probably assumed was my goal in starting this thread. It wasn't. How a +0 to a mechanic with loads of storytelling flavor potential qualifies still mystifies me.), from my PoV you've also managed to curb the...

    Adamantine and Mithral

Point taken. The initial questions were answered. Discussions about "why" were getting badly bogged down. There is a downside to league play. Building and playing a character with deeper and enjoyable relationships and flavor can have aspects that get in the way of keeping it portable across...

    Adamantine and Mithral

Which has nothing to do with much of what I've been talking about. What in the name of god does story origin have to do with a 4th or 5th level character wanting to build a home? NOTHING. In what way is adamantine or Mithril inherently magical if not imbued with a spell? I hear either crickets...

    Adamantine and Mithral

Wow, you really told me, right? So because the PHB doesn't explicitly say I can buy or build a house, I can't. I could be wealthy or even noble, but I can't buy, make, or inherit anything I can't carry with me. That's basically your argument. So by that logic, because the monsters are in the MM...

DM Discussion Thread: Boltsmelter's Book (Spoilers)

Very short chase. found a narrow alley, dropped caltrops and ball bearings behind us, and we ran like mad for the faction contact. The chase was maybe three rounds, tops.

And the only practical difference being that with most personal possessions, there is no requirement to register or give notice to the state of ownership or changes in such. How does that make any difference at all? We notate equipment buy sell on log sheets anyway, how is this any different...

    Adamantine and Mithral

You can't own property? Seriously? So your class equipment is on loan or something? Everything material the character has is property, they own it. If they didn't, they would not be able to sell it, as you point out in another thread. I call BS. If it's little more than fluff, then what is the...

    Adamantine and Mithral

So would a Deep Gnome Earthspur Miner with the tools required be able to excavate a cave and tunnels to live in? Would that be "Crafting" or "Practicing a Profession?" Starting to question whether there's any point in even having the equipment available.
