waking up in an occupied square

From the 3.5 FAQ: "In a combat, Bob the fighter is unconscious from wounds, and Grog the orc moves into Bob’s square. A friendly cleric heals Bob so that Bob regains consciousness. So the orc and prone Bob are now occupying the same square. Now what happens? The rules say that Bob and Grog can’t...

    Low-CR constructs with ranged attacks?

Ah. My bad. I was looking at their stats from the DDM Card... but those versions evidently have 6 fighter levels. Yeah... Maugs seem like a good idea then (and their miniatures can be obtained cheaply).

    Permanency and greater magic fang

Note that permanency and greater magic fang would almost certainly need to be supplied by two separate spellcasters. That seems pretty reasonable.

    Low-CR constructs with ranged attacks?

That doesn't seem very low-CR (maug's start at CR9 I believe). If you want to go that route, various modrons* use ranged attacks while still being low-CR. * Note: even though they are listed as outsiders in the linked supplement, they are actually living constructs now (stats in the most recent...

    Low-CR constructs with ranged attacks?

... or animate a gargantuan-sized 'mecha' that is bristling with crossbows and ballista. Sure, it could only fire three of them per round, but it'd certainly look intimidating.

    Low-CR constructs with ranged attacks?

You could always use standard animated objects. There is no reason that they couldn't use ranged weapons. The rules say that they are: "Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry." ... so they can...

    Permanency and greater magic fang

You could always discuss it with the player. Given the potential difficulties in procuring high level druids, your generousity isn't mandatory. Your player probably wouldn't have a problem with you limiting the Caster level (until he reaches higher levels). Note for the OP: each casting of GMF...

    Permanency and greater magic fang

Yup. Some more tips for the OP (in case you are truly worried that the DM is planning to hit you with GDM's): A ring of counterspells (loaded with GDM) can help prevent targeted GDM's, while a bunch of CL 21 magic mouths can protect against area GDM's (the magic mouths could be created by a...

[Quotation]So now I conclude that D&D3R is a miniature game.

Improved Natural Attack, TWF'ing and a permanent Greater magic fang +5 (about 9k gp) do not appear to require much in the way of magic items or support from casters. Having often optimized both, I simply found the monk easier is all. ymmv.

[Quotation]So now I conclude that D&D3R is a miniature game.

Heh. Thanks to things like monk's belt, Improved Natural Attack, Greater magic fang +5, TWF'ing, etc., the dex-based monks in my campaigns always seemed to be more formidable than any of the other melee PCs.

    Permanency and greater magic fang

Yeah... that is a bit of irony... the larger the city, the greater the chance that a higher-level NPC druid will be randomly generated for it. Presumeably, there are 20th level casters available somewhere, and the D&D rules seem to condone high-level scrolls being more readily available than...

Evard's Black Tentacles get only one try?

Sure, just clarifying (didn't know if I missed something).
  13. M

    Permanency and greater magic fang

Yup. But if a 20th level caster cannot be located, try for a lower level one that has his Caster Level temporarily augmented using a bead of karma, candle of invocation, orange ioun stone, and/or a ring of spell-storing loaded with death knell. Most cities should have a 14-16th level druid...

Evard's Black Tentacles get only one try?

    Core rules, or the RC?

    Large greatsword

Well, I personally allow things like using: 1) The haft of a polearm as an improvised quarterstaff 2) A spear as an improvise lance (for extra damage while mounted) 3) A lance as an improvised spear (for extra damage when set against a charge) 4) An arrow as an improvised dagger (that's even in...

    Permanency and greater magic fang

That is why you get GMF +5 (i.e. Caster Level 20) for a few gp more. CL20 spells are effectively immune to regular dispel magic (the DC is too high).

Evard's Black Tentacles get only one try?

The rules neglect to say many things (example: they don't actually say that your opponent loses dex if you attack from a hidden position, and they forget to give monks proficiency with unarmed strikes). However, in this case the spell description does indeed say something 'of the sort': "The...

    Improvised (i.e. -4) pole-arm.

    Magic item query (metamagic)

Correct, but an Archmage (from the DMG) with the Mastery of Elements ability could still cast sonicballs in 3.5, so the question still has merit.

Evard's Black Tentacles get only one try?

While I am normally a proponent of the FAQ, that seems like an overly literal reading. The writer's intent, the description and logic suggest that the tentacles would continue to attack creatures in the area.
