    Elrond

I would call him some kind of loremaster. 'Wizard' in LotR implies something pretty specific, but I would say it's closest to what he's all about. Maybe some kind of non-magical sage or noble class, then into a loremaster prestige class.

How do I play a DOS game on Widows XP?

Has anyone ever tried to get MechWarrior 3 running on any of these platforms? I've never had any luck getting it to run on a post-Windows 2000 computer, and it's one of my very favorite games.

Arrrrggghhh!!! My comp's infected by a trojan!!

You should be able to get rid of it if you run Avast! (here ) and AVG (here).

Fantasy Art Staple That's Never Been Represented In-Game

'course, in order to provide cover, a shield has to be able to stand up against a gout of dragon fire. If they claimed total cover in that manner, I'd probably roll damage against the shield, since they weren't trying to dodge or anything. Probably not good for the shield.

    Ghoulish alternatives

I've always described ghoul paralysis as a kind of supernatural disease, kind of a super-fast version of tetanus. You don't freeze in place as much as you start convulsing. Then all your muscles lock up, straining against each other, and you're forced to lie there, twitching occasionally. I do...

good creatures to animate as skeletons

Hydras are generally going to be the best skeletons. Anything with multiple attacks and no dependence on supernatural or unusual physical abilities is going to go well. Honestly, a lot is going to depend on what monsters your GM throws against you.

Robert Frost home in Vermont vandalized

Better fences make better neighbors. R_R, looks like it was a bunch of kids drinking in the home. I'm somewhat surprised the place didn't have any security alarms or anything. I expect they didn't want to mess the place up by wiring it.

    Disc World

Fifth Elephant and Thud! are both Watch books, and those are IMO the most serial of all of the books. There's a fairly clear progression in Ankh-Morpork from a generic fantasy city in the first books to a more modern city, and most of that progression comes in the Watch books. You also get new...

D&D 4E Do you limit or ban raise dead? Do you expect to again in 4E?

Coming back from the dead can have side effects. If you get off lightly, these are just creepy bits of description that might have roleplaying effects. One PC only saw his rotting corpse if he looked in a reflective surface; one started hearing voices of the dead. I don't have a table or...

Benefit of having 2 Ring of Wizardry of the same level?

Personally, I'd rule that it was two bonuses from the same source, and thus the second ring wouldn't do anything. Whether or not it's typed, it's still exactly that - two bonuses from the same source.

    Disc World

This Discworld Reading Order List might be helpful - it breaks down the various books by characters, as there are distinct sub-series, focusing on different characters. In general, I prefer the City Watch books, focusing around Sam Vimes and the rest of the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork. Guards...

Planning a new computer - what do you think?

The decision to go 2GB of RAM rather than 4 was one of cost; I can splurge later, and pick up an extra 2GB without having to change anything significant about the system. Same with the hard drive - I have about 95 GB right now in a pair of IDE drives. One of the reasons I picked the motherboard...

Planning a new computer - what do you think?

Alright, I'm in the process of putting together a new rig, and here's what I've come up with so far, after an hour or two of poking through Newegg. Is there anything glaring here I'm missing, any incompatibilities or problems with any of these items? Anything clearly better I should consider...

Shift grip as a free action?

The compromise my GM and I reached when I was going to play an arcane spellcaster with a dwarven waraxe was that it was a free action that you could only do once per turn. So, over the course of two turns, I could full attack with a two-handed grip, then switch to a one-handed grip. On the next...

    What game was this?

No, it was considerably more recent than Battle Chess. I don't believe it was ever a commercial game; it was an online game, and I don't really remember it ever getting all that big. I just remember thinking it was quite fun for a while, and then we both stopped playing it. Kind of a long shot...

    Wireless Internet Problem

Nah, Thanee's right. It's gremlins. Sometimes that's all the explanation you get. Particularly with Windows networking.

    Wireless Internet Problem

Alright, good to know. M... money? She paid for it, therefore she can have nice things, even if she doesn't really know how to use them. You have to pay extra to be taught how to use things, after all. ;-) You're starting to approach the 'burn it down and start over with a fresh Windows...

    Wireless Internet Problem

Before I go on, did you turn off the wireless card, then restart the computer with the Ethernet cable plugged in? It shouldn't really be necessary, but if it's having trouble figuring out which connection to use, that would solve it. Alright. Assuming that didn't work... That narrows the list...

    Wireless Internet Problem

A few questions. This does sound fairly odd - particularly that you were able to get online at Panera, but not anywhere else. Up until that point, I was betting on wireless card driver wonkiness, but if it works somewhere, that's probably not the problem. Is the desktop computer using a...
