    D&D 5E (2014) Why is level 5-10 the "sweet spot" in D&D

Your assessment of 4E is accurate, but for the wrong reasons. 4E's issues multiplied at higher levels, and there were two main factors: 1. The higher level you go in 4E, the greater the impact of system mastery. Unoptimized PCs in 4E would defeat enemies more slowly and hence grind. The power...

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

That's why I make the distinction between fudging and cheating. If the DM is aware and is ok with it I call that fudging, not cheating.

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

Looking down on and not wanting any part of something isn't the same thing. I don't see people who prefer point buy or arrays implying that those who don't are lesser roleplayers. I can't say the same about the reverse.

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

This thread has made it clear that there are people who look down on people who won't be happy playing with low stats, or playing lower stats than somebody else at the table.

What is the purpose of this thread then?

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

If you choose to play wimpy kid, that's your choice. If the DM says I have to play wimpy kid because that's what I rolled and thems the breaks, it's not my choice. You could say I chose to roll stats and I choose to abide by the DM's rules, but if those were the rules I would have chosen not to...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Cheese

Tieflings seem to get a pass from some people thanks to Planescape.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I certainly haven't played it enough to get a feel for 5E, but I haven't been able to see any specific feel from the books. Not to say there isn't one, it just might not be clear, as 3E's feel wasn't clear from reading the books and only came out in play. If I had to describe the feel of playing...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

    1. That sort of DM probably wouldn't be that way in public. They'd assert "my story/word" and keep the glee to themselves. 2. Those DMs have expressed that glee under the guise of Internet anonymity.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I've been leaning more towards offensive glass cannon. I'd probably go full caster exclusively if the game started at level 5 or later, though going Warlock 2 followed by Bard 18 or Sorcerer 18 would probably ease my issues with low level casters starting from 1. The character I've chosen to...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Those weren't our GMs. Our GMs tended to favor high combat, low lethality, low level(1-10) high powered games(high stats and plentiful magic items) that focused on long campaign story arcs a la LotR or the Dragonlance novels. Pushing the mechanics and building to mechanical strength was...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Cheese

Anything that goes against traditional AD&D aesthetics is cheesy.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

It might have had something to do with the ages involved. Most of the table was still in high school and the problem player was older. He was older than me at the time, 25-27 I believe. He was related to one of the wallflowers and had DMed for most of the table in the past, and had introduced...

Will the version of the other players and the DM suffice?

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

The DM didn't play ball because the plans were stupid. His words, when I talked to him about it outside of game. It also wasn't really the game we had been playing, this player joined about 8 months after the campaign began after a seat opened up when once of us went to away to college. As I...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I'd say about 75% of the instances of this scenario happened within a single campaign, so I'll describe the situation there. For #2 the 17 step plan where every step had to go exactly right described by the post I was responding to was pretty accurate. For #3 that conversation did, in fact...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I find it funny how you describe 2nd ed AD&D in this and other posts when contrasted with my own 2E experiences. As I've previously said, I played 2E over its final 5 years, and amongst the people I gamed with at the time we had completely abandoned the 2E philosophy you are talking about. I...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

You're trying to pin this all on 4E, but my position also stems from 8 years of 3E and 5 years of late era 2E(which in my area resembled 3E/4E/5E more than traditional AD&D during those years in tone and attitude). I think you're mistaken about the extreme part. It's only extreme to those...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

In my case when I was the one going "whohoo monsters!", usually: 1. The planning stage took too long 2. The planners were bad at it and the plan was always too complex 3. The DM wasn't particularly willing to go along All three at once Sometimes I didn't go "whohoo monsters!", particularly...
