D&D General If not death, then what?

This isn't the map of the now infamous battle, but close enough to give bearings. The bad guys are north of the map past the trees. My guy is hunkered down behind the brown building at around 8oclock with no LOS to the bad guys I'm concentrating on my spell. The wizard is popping out...

D&D General If not death, then what?

Our barbarian has a higher DEX than STR for the record. It is a new player trying some things out. Also, once again, the plan was to kill the zombie giant FROM AFAR so it couldnt do it's tremendous damage back. Then once it was toppled to move in and kill the three human sized opponents. The...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

There are many consequences you can't get back from that aren't even remotely related to dying. You could do an entire epic story about a supreme grandmaster warrior and how they can't get over that ONE time they lost a scrimmage match versus an inferior. I find those things more interesting...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

That was an actual thing that happened to an3e character of mine. It was a replacement 6th level character coming in as I had just lost a different one. Rogue pops up and joins the party for no real reason other than to play the game. First 15 minutes of play we had entered the...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Maybe a better middle ground can be had by looking at this with a different term....fault...instead of punishment. Your stance seems to be saying more often than not a character death is the players fault. This is where I think most people are disagreeing with you. When people say "random"...

D&D General If not death, then what?

Man, I hate multiquote sooo much. I can barely do a single quote because I'm using ENworld via a phone and Chrome browser. 1. The 4th character was not on the side of the map we were. They were a ranger attacking from a different board edge. The hiding/splitting up goal was to confuse the...

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

Sure thing. I'll just refer you back to your post #101 which started our side discussion and you can read for yourself whether or not I was talking about classes in general or specifically about the merits of SG vs Fireball in the post of mine you replied to.

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

Two separate conversations. 1. Is fireball "better" than spirit guardians for DPR purposes? 2. Are wizards better than clerics on the DPR ladder? The whole fireball discussion (#1) came about by someone refuting my statement that Spirit Guardians puts clerics over wizards/sorcerers on the DPR...

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

Fireball vs Spirit Guardians is clearly not apples to apples, however looking at the spells from a zoomed out view....I haven't heard anyone saying 5e fireball is an OP spell, but I have seen a lot of talk about SG being overtuned. While this doesn't necessarily mean SG is always better from a...

D&D 5E (2014) What mechanic/feature/etc. would you like to see more utilized in 5E?

I like that idea a lot. I'm thinking a series of bonuses you can "turn on" by giving up X dice from your sneak attack pool as long as they are active. Specifically I'm thinking many of the different conditions that could be inflicted at varying cost.

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

Id you want to get into the weeds, fireball does an average of 28 damage once versus Spirit Guardians 13/round. In two rounds you are close to equal and in 3 the SG has outpaced the fireball. You can also look at damage type....fire vs. radiant and the relative merits of which one is...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Can't it be a combination of choice and fickle luck that leads to success/failure?

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

The pawn disconnect is to me that losing a pawn is expected and does not put you in a Game Over state. Losing g your King does, so that's a closer approximation of losing a character.

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Yes Yes they can. As I mentioned (I think it was this thread) in my last session my 10th level druid went from full HP to dying in one hit despite me not casting spells and remaining hidden behind a building on the opposite edge of the map from the BBEG.

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Interesting. I almost feel the opposite about it. If my character can be lost instantly due to fickle dice rolls I feel like I'm just playing an elaborate boardgame instead of a collective storytelling experience.

D&D General If not death, then what?

Additional facts for the scenario. 1. In addition to killing me, the spell also did 52 damage to the party barbarian and mage and blinded both of them. The barbarian for 1 round and the mage for 3. 2. The party split up to do guerrilla tactics against the bad guys from different areas to...

D&D General If not death, then what?

I don't get attached to most characters because they always die before they have achieved anything interesting by way of personal story goals. My characters have left behind a small countries worth of now abandoned shops, towers, collections, projects, and other infrastructure of never...

D&D General If not death, then what?

This might be the great divide....fair and neutral aren't synonyms in my games. I'm facilitating a game where the PCs are the main stars of an incredible journey, and I am there to give them chances to be stars and incredible. I'm not there strictly to be a non participant in the story acting...

D&D General If not death, then what?

This might be your experience, but not mine. I lost a 5e character is the last session I played. 10th level wildfire druid. Battle against a big wizard guy and minions, including a huge giant zombie. Cast Heat Metal on the zombies armor and hide behind a building at extreme 9oclock of the...
