How did I not see a beholder?

On a, I totally agree. I mean, what the f---, even Commoners have those skills. On b, I think it's a combination of the two. If cross-class skills were limited to half the ranks but still cost 1/1, you'd have less trouble with the PHB2 retraining rules and dipping in cross-class skills would be...

Retrospective: 3.x stuff I'm glad I left behind

While many others felt differently, "Now in 4e you don't need a Cleric..." "...he can be a Warlord! *ba-dum ching*" is exactly how that came across, especially since having a "Leader"-type was never particularly necessary in my 3e groups, whereas it sure is in 4e.

How did I not see a beholder?

14, and I saw the gorilla. I personally don't have a problem with Perception checks, though, because I've had the Combat Stress thing happen more than a few times in laser tag (with all the noise, it can be hard to notice people who are moving in such a way as to collide with you) and it...

Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e; 4e upgrade or new game??

This is possibly why he didn't say it was a summary of 2e D&D.

Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e: "Reads Bad, Plays Good"

Forked from: Disappointed in 4e I personally found that 4e played almost exactly how it read, with the exception of some mechanics that looked perfectly fine and turned out to be a bit "durhur" in play. (See: Orb Wizards and stunlock. With all of the whining various DM sources do about not...

    Disappointed in 4e

Playtesting is designed to make sure that rules that read good aren't actually bad, which is very useful but also completely different. I'd imagine that the Warlock read perfectly good to its designer, after all, and I'd prefer to say that the "14400 spells per day!" people were doing it wrong...

    Disappointed in 4e

This totally perplexes me. I mean, if I had a dollar for every time I read something in a RPG, thought it was terrible, then ended up liking it... well, I'd still be penniless. For me, play can bring out problems with a text that aren't visible on a casual read, and acts as a much quicker way...

D&D 4E 4E module using the old OGL license?

From the stuff I have? Dragora's Dungeon contains the OGL and refers to itself as "4E Compatible". Fang, Fist, and Song is produced under the GSL. Punjar, the Tarnished Jewel contains no license. Sellswords of Punjar contains the OGL and refers to itself as "4E Compatible". So as of yet, both...

Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e; 4e upgrade or new game??

Because "upgrades" have very high (near 100% for free ones!) acceptance rates for a simple reason - they are, in almost all ways, just plain better than what came before, without "Well, tradeoffs have been made..." nonsense. Almost no one wants to play NWN with no expansions or patches when they...

    Draconomicon Excerpt: Frostforged Wyrm

On one hand, the DMG has rules for "stunt" attacks, but basically just has those listed as dealing damage, when something other than damage seems appropriate here. On the other hand, "it has little demons crawling on it!" -> "So I shoot them off!" seems like a totally obvious leap of player...

Please stop with the PEACH nonsense

It's a WotC Forums-ism for "This is complete or mostly complete mechanical work that I want an honest mechanical critique of, not inanity or doody-headedness." It serves two functions. One is giving people who can give honest critiques a quick tag to separate the wheat from the chaff, and the...

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

Hmm, not entirely. I can go off of "Human Fighter 12" in 2e D&D just as well. But having a detailed mechanical representation of a character that I don't want to play is the worst. I don't think any version of D&D does this, but a lot of games have things like WoD's derangements acquired in play...

turning back the clock on paladins

You should play a Crusader, but ask to use the Warblade mechanic for using and recovering powers. It doesn't really unbalance them, but it means you don't have to deal with getting random powers.

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

I guess I'll throw in my hat here. I find that I can roleplay better when I've made the character I wanted to make. If I end up making a guy I don't like because of the system, or didn't make a character at all, it's hit or miss whether I'll feel like playing him for more than a session or two...

    Digital Insider #13

Well, yeah, that's obviously what they're going for. The caveat being that it'd be possible to "attach" magazines that you've paid for to a user's account, and they didn't. Perhaps they didn't want to for some reason, or perhaps they just didn't think of that before it was too late and don't...

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

I don't think either 3e or 4e has one printed on the cover, but I'm going to hold up my AD&D 2e player's handbook that says "For Ages 10 and Up" and then beat you with it mercilessly.

    Digital Insider #13

The MTBF of your average hard drive is much, much shorter than that of your average house. Or, in other words, I've lost a hard drive and all the data contained on it approximately once every 3 years over my lifespan. I've lost my house and all my possessions contained within it never. I...

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

Okay, so the fact that there's a whopping one monster in 4e - and not really even one you'd expect (heck, not even the one they said would be Good in preview material) - is Good means that you can't talk about how they've removed all of the Good monsters even though that was an explicit design...
