It would have cost more if it included all the PHB spells as well as. WotC is also probably assuming (and rightly so IMO) that most if not all players and DMs will have access to the PHB.

Sounds like DM burnout to me. Will someone else in the group DM after your campaign ends and give you a chance to play? We switch off every two "adventures" between two campaigns and I find it really recharges my DM batteries.

I picked up a dry erase calendar at Staples (~$12). I numbered the squares 1-35 (in reverse order) with permanent marker. We've found it to be a big time saver.
