    {OT} Buying Swords

We started using some of the Hanwei practice blades in SCA fencing combat. They were real popular for awhile but now we are apparently hearing reports of breakage whereas schlager and del tin blades have lasted forever. I'm sort of leery about any steel products coming from China, especially...

    {OT} Buying Swords

If you want western blades, one name pretty much stands out as the top of the heap: Fulvio Del Tin. The man's blades are amazing. He does everything out of a forge in Italy and his stuff is not cheap, but it is very, very good. As far as I can tell, he doesn't sell direct from his site, which...

    Superhero systems?

You're right. I do admire GR for going as far as they did with the system. Just like I really admire AEG for getting the jump on modern-age d20 games with Spycraft. Both of these seem like improvements on the d20 system. Spyrcraft did it with a fantastic, innovative combat round that made things...

    The Bane of PrC

I don't know. I think it makes perfect sense to plan out a character for a prestige class. Many people approach their lives with a specific goal in mind. For example, if I want to be a neurosurgeon, I am going to study specific things and practice specific things designed to get me there. For...

    Superhero systems?

The HERO system's advancement system isn't really all that different from the character creation system, which is the beauty of it. You get experience points, which you spend on stuff. It's not all that unlike character creation. You do occasionally need to recalculate things, but that happens...

    matrix d20?

I think that your best bet for this would be to go with a modified version of AEG's Spyrcraft rules with WP/VP, or better yet, only WP and a mechanic for dodging attacks. You could have feats and abilities that give you extra actions each round. Or you could wait and see if Green Ronin's...

    Superhero systems?

One of the best benchmarks for judging how well a superhero RPG system will work is how well it deals with the various superhero types. Hero system can do them all. You want Batman? Easy. Basic gadget-based powers, cool talents and perks, and skills through the roof, combined with some...

    Farscape d20

Hey guys, A buddy of mine just picked up the Farscape d20 book. It's very shiny and has a lot of cool things in it. But I noticed something about the book that I found a little unusual. 1. The book uses AEG's Spycraft d20 mechanics (full and half actions, a variation on wound and vitality...

Chicago Gameday - 11/09/02 (now including the Castle Brawl photos link!)

Character Creation for the d20 Brawl Hi, Mark. 10th level characters for your brawl have a lot of gold. What can and can we not purchase during character creation? I remember hearing that we're sticking with the core books. 1. Are custom designed magic items allowable within reason? 2. What...

    Pendragon d20?

There is one thing that kills a d20 Pendragon game. Magic. In the Chaosium game, magic is rare, extremely dangerous, very subtle, and difficult to do. In d20, wizards lob fireballs, disintegrate people and objects, and alter reality. In the Chaosium game, faith is a very real attribute and...

Sure... sounds like a blast. I haven't built a character for an outright slugfest in quite awhile.

    Fantastic mysteries vs. DM cheating

I wish all GM's would abide by this. Actually, this is where I generally accuse a GM of cheating. It boils down to a failure to understand the game and the use of Rule 0 to compensate. Player: "OK, so the evil wizard is moving through my threatened area. I get an attack of opportunity. Oh...

    Fantastic mysteries vs. DM cheating

Which is actually pretty cool. Though it's difficult to maintain the believability of your world without some internal consistency, even if they are rules that only you know. If something works one way, there should be a reason for it to work a different way the next time that is, at least in...

    Fantastic mysteries vs. DM cheating

It depends on the GM. Generally, it's a matter of trust between the people involved. So long as players and GM trust each other, and no one abuses that trust, it's OK for things to be "different." Abuse of trust can, of course, ruin that relationship.

Chicago Gameday - 11/09/02 (now including the Castle Brawl photos link!)

Thanks Mark. Sure, I'll make it an official offering. As far as a slot goes, I'd prefer to have it in the afternoon session. Got a question as to one other game: how do we generate ability scores for the "This Castle's Not Big Enough For the Lot of Us! (D&D/d20 10th level Brawl)" event in the...

Why don't you buy non-WoTC stuff?

I've noticed an inconsitency in your logic. Your original statement was: "WotC puts out better stuff." It now seems to be: "all the WotC stuff I have purchased has been good." This may well be true, but they are not one and the same. Just because you haven't purchased a bad WotC book doesn't...

    [ELH Adventure] Anyone Try Running This? {Spoilers}

Heh. This sounds like more of the same trend I've noticed with WotC's modules. the last one I played was the Bastion of Broken Souls and we were all wondering, after a party of six long-running characters had a decent challenge, how four 18th level PC's straight out of the book could even...

Why don't you buy non-WoTC stuff?

I will grant you that there were some really crappy books that came out early on. But WotC released its share of them too. Anyone remember the Hero Builder's Guidebook? The trend has been for the d20 publishers to put out better and better stuff, while I feel that WotC's books, while mostly...

Why don't you buy non-WoTC stuff?

Well, I can only speak from personal experience, but generally, up until recently, WotC stuff has outnumbered non-WotC stuff because I was still buying the "core" of the system. Here's what I own from WotC (excluding subsidiaries like AEG and licensees like Kenzer): Player's Handbook Psionics...

Chicago Gameday - 11/09/02 (now including the Castle Brawl photos link!)

silly question - what slots in what games are still open? Is there a place we can see an update of the offerings?
