Obective look at WotC's history with D&D

Disclaimer: I am a 3e gamer, so my views of what went down may not agree with yours. This is *not* an invitation to Edition War, don't try to refute my views as its pointless. Just post your own. WotC saves D&D!: TSR was going down and WotC flexed its magic muscles and bought the brand. To keep...

Do people in your games actually use "builds"

If by "builds" you mean "Do you put thought into your next level (or next 10!) before you actually gain it", then yes. Through out 3e, through out my very brief exposure to 4e, and even in 2e I had a good idea of how a character was going to progress. With 2e the big difference is that we...

Pathfinder 1E Shackled City - Golarion?

I am suiting up to DM the SCAP for my group and there has been some discussion of "where" to place Cauldron. And while I don't like PF's "house rules" all that much, I do like the setting of Golarion. So, where in Golarion would *you* put Cauldron? I am contemplating putting it near the Stolen...

    D&D 5E (2014) Restrictions in D&D Next

Paladin being a "basic" class is something I have never cared for. Back in 2e and earlier Paladins were special, because you had to be "this high" (minimum stats, including a 17 Cha!, and Lawful Good). In 3e and later, Paladins were just "Cleric-lite", who also had to be L/G. Sure, I've seen a...

    "Best" single class party

Team Druid is my #1. Clerics or Wizards would be good also (team Wizard is doing something wrong if it is taking dmg).

    Handiest Super Power?

I don't know what they call in DC, but Dr Manhattan had it. In Marvel its the Power Cosmic. Nothing else comes close...

Why do all classes have to be balanced?

Do characters need to be equals? No. Characters do need a chance to shine, however. Casters can switch-hit when needed, but shouldn't be doing it when it steps on the toes of other characters. The Avengers movie is a great example of 6 wildly different power leveled "PCs" shining in an awesome...

    Opportunity attacks

AoOs work for that at the low levels. At the higher levels your mages shouldn't need the protection from the meatshields. Clerics: just as tanky as the tanks Druids: Wildshape - flying + long range spells Mages: Mirror Image, Displacement, etc Psionicists: Vigor + Share Pain = "tanky mage"...

Need advice for upcoming Gestalt campaign

I would recommend Swashbuckler 3 / Wizard 3. Swashbuckler 3 is a great dip, but I wouldn't touch the rest of that class. In further levels I would suggest Rogue levels until you can PrC into something more interesting.

Would You Use A (Villainous) Race Like This?

No. 1) I try to use a little "color-coded for your convenience" as possible. IMC, Dragon color does not tell you: breath weapon type, immunity(ies), alignment or any other factors. My "dark elves" look little different from the other Sidhe, but they do worship a Spider Demon and have gained...

Pathfinder 2nd Edition (no, don't get excited!)

PF 2e: rules for levels 21+ that do not suck! I consider the Epic Level Handbook to be 3e's greatest failure.

    Killer DMs

I am not a Killer DM. To me that term says "some who (ab)uses his DM power to kill off characters - yes I have seen this sort of behavior before and heard about it from others)... usually because he thinks its funny". That said, there is always a chance of death in my campaigns. Combat quickly...

Why do all classes have to be balanced?

Knock (and other "niche replacing" spells) *is* awesome. However, it does not exist to replace the thief, it exists so that the mage can fill in when the thief doesn't show up. Mages who uses knock when the party has a locksmaster is just a jerk. :D I always learn knock, but I rarely memorize...

Why do all classes have to be balanced?

In short, they don't. I played 2e for almost a decade and despite the fact that my players and I knew that casters were total badasses past a certain level, we never lacked for fighters and thieves (or fighter/thieves). And I kid you not, I once had half of one of my 2e groups whine at me...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder vs. Greyhawk campaign settings

I've never cared for Greyhawk. I got into (A)D&D in the summer of 89. I was 10yrs old and trying to get into Greyhawk at that age was for me very difficult. It came off "dry" and "boring" to me. My first campaigns were set in Cormyr and later my group(s) experimented with other FR regions and...

Possessing your friends for fun and profit.

So what happens if a Caster buffs himself (using personal and non-personal buffs) and then casts Magic Jar and takes over someone else's body? 1) all the spells transfer along with the Caster's soul and thus are still in use with the new body 2) all the spells stay put in the inert body. 3)...

    Feats That Shouldn’t Be Feats

Natural Spell 1) it should not be at all, as some think it makes Druids too awesome. 2) it should be a class feature (perhaps Druids don't get a 6th level feat :p). I've never heard of a Druid (PC) 6+ who didn't have Natural Spell...
