DOGS OF WAR - Game starting in January, Northern Virginia

Okay, last post. We're trying to get a list of players who are actually going to COME to this game. We're trying to scrape together a bare minimum of players here. Come on! It's going to be a blast.

    Polyhedron article on PDFs

How does this work? How do you, the shop owner, make a profit on it? I'd like to pitch the idea to my FLGS.

Increasing traffic Thru Ebay for PDF's

There are lots of people who use ebay as, basically, advertising for their online businesses.

    Lightning Press

Okay, I've got an idea. It would require a partnership between PDF publishers, game stores, and print shops. Here's how the process works. The customer is at the game store, and sees a kiosk for this service... basically, it's a computer with a CD-rom full of PDF documents. This computer...

    Silence counterspell?

My players never memorized huge amounts of silence, though I can see how a wand of silence could have made things difficult for spellcasters. I would simply rule that any spell prevented by silence doesn't actually get discharged, it just isn't cast, so the spellcaster can step out of the area...

    Why do a homebrew?

One way to pique player interest in a homebrew is to have them help build it. Ask the cleric what his religion is like. Ask the fighter who he learned from, and what the fighting style is like. Ask the wizard whether he learned his craft at an academy or as an apprentice to a hermit.

    Straight Dope on Eberron . . .

A D20 Author sighs, and wishes his budget could support books he can't use in his works.

Mystic Theurge - how's it playing?

The "Flavor" of a character is provided by the person behind it. The choices of class, prestige class, feat, skill, etc. is simply the means of making that idea work in the game.

Stronghold building - Do you do this?

In my upcoming game, "Dogs of War", it will be almost a requirement in order to meet the campaign objectives.

    I thought I was a good DM...

And there's your "lesson learned"... every game with new people should have this.

    Is Domination Evil?

Domination can be used for good purposes. If you use it to make a criminal march himself to jail, for example, you've used a non-lethal means and that's a good thing. Used gently, I don't see that it's any more evil than any other spell.

    Getting Rid of Level Drain

Personally, I think the reason that people hate level loss and magic item loss is that it hits the PLAYER where it hurts. Some people play DnD to have powerful characters. Losing levels or magic items is a setback there, especially if you look at it as a competition between the various PC's...

That's why I made up my "Book of Fate" system, that ties these together.

Anyone got a decent build for a knife-throwing character?

Hey, welcome to the world of DnD 3.X! That's exactly how the game was designed. At every level, you've got X resources to spend, and at least 2X really good choices to spend them on. Trying to find an "optimal" build is fun, but in the end, the benefit of one good build over another is...

    Using Detect Evil/Good

Why does the fantasy game have to take on the medieval setting? "Might makes Right" is a very lawful-evil idea, and if that is a theme of your campaign, then the rulers will very likely be evil. If that is true, then it is very unlikely that the fact that someone shows up on a detect evil...

    Missing in action?

Yeah, I'm waiting for HH too. I'm hoping that finals treat him well, and he'll survive to next year.

    When does Verisimilitude break down?

Amber had a way of dealing with this, though it involves a bit of cheating. When a PC does something that you feel you SHOULD have thought of, but had a brain fart and DIDN'T... assume that the NPC, smarter than you, didn't have that cerebral subluxation and that he DID think of it, and he DID...

    Standard action, drinking a potion

Well, it's a must-have for people who don't have the perspicacity to drink their potions BEFORE combat starts. Personally, I love the look on the player's face when the hobgoblin he's fighting sunders the potion of Cure Serious Wounds the fighter is trying to drink in the middle of combat...
