Gavin Norman, Necrotic Gnome, Talks Old-School Essentials and D&D 5E Dolmenwood

The Kickstarter was for multiple high quality hardcover books, yes, though there is also an all-in-one volume option also. Old-School Essentials is designed as a modular system - the core rule set of BX, but then you can add, or swap out, the other parts. Races, classes & equipment are one book...

Gavin Norman, Necrotic Gnome, Talks Old-School Essentials and D&D 5E Dolmenwood

paladinn Necrotic Gnome is producing thier own version of the 1E content. As part of the Kickstarter, Gavin did a book of the races and classes, and a second volume with Druid & Illusionist spells. Also included are some 1e rules (poison, 2-weapon fighting, weapon specialization, among others)...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Essentials Kit Offers a New Place to Start

Buying these up right away does empty the shelf, yes, but also shows Target there is interest and they need to restock ASAP.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Essentials Kit Offers a New Place to Start

I don't entirely disagree, but FLGSs are already a dying breed for a number of reasons and people argue that WotC should be pushing MORE business to them, not pulling any, no matter how little, away. Personally, I'm of the mind that it's not the job of Hasbro or WotC to help keep a business...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Essentials Kit Offers a New Place to Start

I checked online yesterday and my local Target wasn't stocking it, but another in the area was supposed to be. Rather than run around chasing a ghost, I ordered a copy online and will have it tomorrow. I'm excited to read through it. It will be interesting to compare the iterations of the basic...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Essentials Kit Offers a New Place to Start

So no different than the original Starter Set? That initial goblin ambush is a TPK in the making if the goblins are run correctly. :-)

    Shadowrun Sixth Edition Announced!

Not at all. I know that I want to play not-Shadowrun. I do assume, however, that Catalyst has the feedback to say that thier Shadowrun audience wants something different and less crunchy than 5E. Otherwise they would not have put the time and money into writing 6E to replace it.

    Shadowrun Sixth Edition Announced!

I'm not sure that's really the case, though. On one hand, yes - the writers are creating something. A vision of how the game should work. But Catalyst, the publisher, ultimately needs to sell product. If a shift to less crunch means more sales, that's what they'll do. Those who enjoy the...

    Shadowrun Sixth Edition Announced!

Yeah, good point. No publisher should want to cater to the desires of their audience... SR will never be "light", so I think you're safe there, but it's pretty clear that they need to swing back in the other direction. People want something playable - in between 4/5E level crunch and the...

Arcane Trickster 30 Eldritch Knight 31 Gloom Stalker 17 Horizon Walker 6 Hunter 18 Oath of the Ancients 28 Oath of Devotion 13 Monster Slayer 6 (Bah, math is hard. Error corrected, thanks for catching it akr71!)

D&D 5E (2014) In Search of the Unknown: The BECMI Chronicles 5E.

Admittedly, the design "style" of B1 and many of these thin, early modules will seem lacking to those used to modern adventure path writing. One does need to remember that it was the first module TSR produced (I believe) so its not as if they had a tried and true template to follow. I'd say...

D&D 5E (2014) Coming Soon - Warriors of Waterdeep: a new Free to Play D&D mobile game

You can add me to the subset of folks that would love to see new games simply along the lines of the old Ultima and Gold Box D&D games. The next step of Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale and NWN1 was cool, but I don't even need those. Even NWN2 started to go too far for me. I have no need for the full...

Starting a Adventure League table at work. Any advice

IMO the AL modules are a great source of short adventures, packaged into nice themed groups. You can use some of the limitations and conventions of AL (PHB+1, etc) to keep things a bit simpler, without running it as a true, legal AL game. If the character portability is a non-issue for you and...

    D&D 5E (2014) BECMI 5E Modules All of It?

Sounds like a fun topic to follow along with to me, so please do carry on! I'd agree that the Basic modules will certainly be a eclectic mix of good and bad, which will make the reviews fun. The one's that have any merit we can discuss in more depth and mull over the 5E conversion ideas. For...

The State of D&D: Products, Psionics, Settings, & More

I hope 6E is FAR, FAR away, as they've hit a homerun with this one, IMO, but that's out of our hands. Introducing good digital tools is certainly a game-changer as far as the sales landscape is concerned. I don't see myself buying another physical book, to be honest, and I expect there are lots...

[POLL] Which Xanathar's Guide Cover Do You Prefer?

C'mon, man. Those vertical lines are clearly a dark gray and dominate the work.

[POLL] Which Xanathar's Guide Cover Do You Prefer?

Didn't like the special Volo's cover and don't like or want this one either. I MUCH prefer all the books have the same design.

The State of D&D: Products, Psionics, Settings, & More

Thirded. They can simply add appendices with notes on changes and the updated timeline for the later eras of Greyhawk.

The State of D&D: Products, Psionics, Settings, & More

Agreed with this. If they can work errata into each updated printing of the PHB, they can certainly replace the index int eh back with something that's actually useful. I printed a copy of the one mention above that I grabbed from here and stuck it in the back if my book. Of course, it's...
