What is important in defining a setting

I like to start at the top and work down. Basics (this stuff can be sketchy for the world as a whole) 1. Geography, climate, cosmology (how many moons, etc) 2. World history - nations, famous kings and adventurers, world events 3. Races (high level) Specifics 1. Local geography (climate...

Great Hero Showdown Round 6 (Voting Closed)

    1. Indy - Gandalf is less heroic to my mind for being so much of a near god figure, while Indy has to rely on his wits and his whip 2. Batman - I do like Spidey for all the angstyness and the fact he's not a flawless hero, but the dark knight is far cooler.

How does the GM handle tough NPCs and how does your party react?

Generally both when I GM or with the GMs that run games for groups I'm in its a mixture of A & B I went with A as how I normally do things.

    RPGNow paid reviewers

Personally I started doing reviews before I recieved any free copies of pdfs largely because I like to be able to check reviews before I buy. Getting free pdfs or books would not change my approach to reviewing, though like Pinotage said I probably find myself being more thorough about reviewing...

How important do you think game balance is?

I voted not very, largely because balance only really works with a very small set of options, after all CR for example is based on a monster fighting a party of the four core iconics - Fighter, Cleric, Wizard and Rogue, any other party composition can drastically affect how effective a monster...

Sword and Sorcery has been done to death.

I agree with this. I think that S&S has a pretty clear definition in common use which is Howardian fantasy, with fairly low use of magic, grim settings (no Elminster coming to bail you out and the gods as uncaring), heroes needing to survive using their wits as well as brawn and a lot of areas...

Have you become disillusioned with 3rd edition?

Currently D&D 3.5 with house rules, Conan RPG, Call of Cthulhu BRP and soon Paranoia. I still enjoy playing fantasy D20, and the 3.5 core rules are a decent set of rules for it, but I can't fall into either the 3e is superior or the my hat of d02 camp, what makes the game is a good GM and...

Great Hero Showdown Round 5 (Voting Closed)

    1. Robin Hood 2. Batman 3. Gandalf 4. Spider Man All tricky, but to be honest not so hard as some of the earlier match ups.

    Party Roles

Do you find the same players end up in the same roles or does it rotate fairly regularly? I think that you tend to find similar roles evolving with groups outside of gaming, from what I remember of social psychology there will be social and emotional leaders, outsiders, etc. I'll try and find...

Got mine yesterday - the games stores in London (UK) have now got it in stock, not sure how long for though if it sells well!

    Minorities & D&D/RPGs

Generally I find in the UK it seems to be fairly heavily white males, but in one of the groups I game with we've had a membership including one british indian, one canadian chinese, one scandinavian, male and female hispanics (Puerto Rican) and a few of us white brits. Also had mixed gender in...

    Would you buy pre-made campaigns?

If it looks to be good quality and didn't have too wide a range of levels (e.g. Lost City of Barakus ) then I could be tempted as I'm currently finding it hard to have time to homebrew.

    Well Privateer is doing well

Generally miniatures seem to be a more reliable market than RPG stuff at the moment, especially D20

    Quaint/cute British place names

Some real place names from the UK Pett's wood Ugley (pronounced as Ugly - usually the source of jokes about the Ugley Womens Institute) Cat's Bottom (yes its real) On the Essex/Hertfordshire borders you have the Matchings - Matching Green, Matching Tye - always felt it would have been better...

D&D minis - how are they painted

As an aside, back in the old days in the UK the Britains toy soldiers were sold ready painted with a lot of the painting being done by home workers in the UK, who were cheap labour in those days. At home means no need to provide on-site facilities, Health and Safety at Work laws less applicable...

    Literary Origins of D&D Monsters

Gnolls come from Lord Dunsay, but his were a cross between gnomes and trolls, rather than hyena-men. The Dunsany troll also seems not to match the D&D style from the mentions in the King of Elfland's Daughter as being more like a fey, smaller than human size, afraid of dogs, etc.

Conan d20: What have been your experiences?

I've played it a few times and like it. It really helps if you like Howard's fiction and a lot of adventures to be against a few tough opponents rather than hordes of mooks that can appear in D&D. I've reviewed it on ENWorld so see that for more detailed opinions.
