'Natural' Dungeons (not just caves!)- any ideas on making them interesting?

Also since D&D contains large creatures and monsters that drill through the earth you can use that. A large purple worm traveled through an area once awhile ago and residents have built supports to keep the ceiling from falling. Or some creatures drilled through rock, maybe to hibernate for...

    Creature Name and Suggestions Please

In the clearing of the forest a large bush sits. 8 ft tall and a 10 ft radius. Its long stems seem to be catching the sun but this plant does not feed using the sun. When an unfortunate creature steps within 30 ft of the bush its stems 'react' to the intruder and throw these hooks which have...

    I'm annoyed at archers.

Has anyone mentioned the quick draw feat? Its a counter to the Grapple an archer thing, which would make an archer who has feats to spare (if a fighter) more lethal. I do think that archers are overpowered. In our campaign we have our first devoted archer (who is new to the party) and he...

    Keeping groups small

While reading the "boot the player" thread I started thinking about my group. Right now we have 7 down from 8. In Spring we had 2 games going where the DMs would switch back and forth between their respective campaigns. During the summer I decided to start a satellite group, of a small size...

    Identify

Identify... Bad news. Our games are pretty much the identify it all unless it is an artifact type thing. The way to make magic items interesting is to make interesting magic items. A +1 dagger of returning ain't that exciting, and less exciting if you can't even use it. The reason we cradle...

    Another Item $ question

+3 Mithral Chainmail, Glamour and Silent Moving (+5) Add in the ability to do word of recall once a week and alter self twice a day as cast by a 5th level sorcerer. (+5) + ((Spelllevel*casterlevel*1000)/(5/number of times per day))x2-extra ability cost) + Same as before + mithral so...

    Boots of Levitation

I can see the fudging. I just can't on this item. Heck you can fly for less. (Wings of flying 2 hour duration). You can also fly for 15,000 which is right in line. But levitation, to me, is on the weak side of 2nd level spells plus it has a longer duration ... Well I'm just complaining...

    Boots of Levitation

I was in the process of preparing to make these boots when I received some Boots of springing and striding which are more useful to my character... Anyways, I decided to make a customized belt of levitation but came up with 6000 GP for the price. Why are the boots 7500 gp? I just could not...

Your thoughts on the power of prestige classes

Prestige classes in my mind are a goal. A Secret Order, a better combatant, or wiser cleric, or smarter wizard. If they are about the same power as everything else then they are not a goal. Prestige classes are ways of rewarding character growth without having to add things to normal...

Once I was researching this spell and I turned into a chicken

rtricher, In my setup the DC for a first level creation would be 17 all the time. A 20th level caster would have a 23+Int (if he maxed his spellcraft) to figure it out. I don't see how you can miss that one. I'm just saying that the progression of DC for higher level spells gets harder at...

Once I was researching this spell and I turned into a chicken

I got better... Is there any rules or guidelines in any splat books about spell researching? I am trying to incorporate an idea I have about how magic actually works into a researching spells model and have some interesting ideas including failure rates and failure effects even to how the...

How to make a player stop being a paladin

I agree with Spatzimus. Talk first. If that doesn't work then I would do the pass the character campaign. There is one person who said his DM rolled up the characters, made them cool and then handed them out to each player. Do everything you can out of game. If this person is still...

    City building discussions

If you are interested in actual cities and how they are protected and how they look then go here http://odur.let.rug.nl/~welling/maps/maps.html . The first link has a couple dozen towns. I actually found more fascinating information on why cities may look this way. The outer wall is built so...

    Vampire vs Lich

Good points. I just have one problem. A spellcaster Vampire is much more potent than a lich. Especially the dumb sorcerers. I personally would have a vampire and fear him/her more. The domination alone can give a vampire a larger following than a lich. Not counting the mindless spawn and...

    Vampire vs Lich

Vampire vs Lich Looking at the stats the Vampire wastes the lichin equal CR. Lich gets +2 to Int, Wis, Cha Vampire gets Str +6, Dex +4, Int +2, Wis +2, Cha +4 Lich = no regeneration Vampire: regen 5 Lich = Paralyzing touch with Fort save Vampire = Slam attack, guaranteed Level loss. Lich...

    Damage Multipliers and Criticals

My Arcane Archer Does 1d8+14 at 13th level. Every critical is (almost) auto Fort save. I've dropped many a creature on the first shot. Now if someone could do the same type of critical on a Heavy pick, w00tness galore.
