    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

Actually you could combine gestalt with AD&D's multi-classing, splitting xp between your classes, and it *might* get closer to balanced with single class PCs once you are out of the low levels.

D&D 5E (2014) Parrying and Protecting versus spells and othe rstuff

By my reading of Parry/Protect: "When you are damaged by an attack while you are wielding a weapon or a shield, you can spend expertise dice to reduce the damage." Damaging spells are not attacks by default (unlike, say 4E). Casting a spell is its own action type, and not an attack action...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

As I remember it, the demi-human multi-classing mostly worked out OK, as it typically put you a couple of levels below the pure classes in terms of raw power, but with a *lot* of flexibility to make up the difference. It was neither a power-play move nor a trap option, and when we played it, it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing in Next

Edit: I think I meant to quote some other part of Li Shenron's post above. I may come back and fix that later! There might be something we can steal from 4E's race designs here. 4E's racial powers were generally designed to be moderately useful, but to scale inherently. There are a variety...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

Very approximately at around levels 5-9: in combination +4 Str, +2 Con, and either +2 Dex or +1 natural armour is easily worth a level of fighter on a simple maths level. The only thing missing is the feats - a creature special attack or quality can cover 2 to 4 fighter levels easily enough. An...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing...AGAIN?

TBH I have this problem with levelling up irrespective of whether PCs stick to a class or not. The assumption of course is that "off screen" the PCs are practicing/training and refining their abilities. Edit: Also, of course, whacking a goblin on the head can improve your ability to identify...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

I like that. Pre-requisite multi-classing at least prevents the weird immediacy of new abilities that come with 3E level dipping. The D&D Next multi-class systems looks like each class will get deconstructed into a special multi-class version. Which is pretty similar, really, to prestige...

    D&D 5E (2014) Overcoming Bounded Accuracy

Sure, 3E also gives levels (CR) to traps and hazards. It didn't bother with simple single-skill-roll items like doors, walls and locks, but it may even of helped a little if it did. To answer the OP, I think that you can scale skill bonuses but not ability checks in D&D Next, and it would work...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

Throwing in the bonus feats is nice. It's an interesting patch, and I'd be happy to see something similar in Next i.e. some class features dished out for each level as you gain it, others handled based on an 'effective class level' which scales somehow against your total class levels. The only...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

By the looks of it, I think the patch works nicely for casters (plus it is needed and welcome addition to help MC casters), but will depend critically on what you get from the features list for non-casters. Some non-casters only get nice stuff from specific features in their progression table...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing--Which and Why?

I've tried hard to use 4E hybrids, as I like the idea, but generally I've been disappointed. They seem to be very hit or miss what works together. IMO you can drive it by looking for mechanical synergies, but not by simply picking what might be a cool combination. It's one of the few areas in 4E...

    Trouble responding to playtest surveys

Got it to work at my end and posted back. I think either Windows Live or your anti-virus had got at the link, so that they could "have a peek" as you clicked through from Outlook Express, and maybe provide their services to you. They do that by prefixing extra commands to the link that makes...

    Prayer vs. Bless: What the...?

My reading is that the spells can be cast in any order, both continue to apply at the same time, and the Bless effects suppress the Prayer effects. It would have been simpler IMO to have that the other way around, with Prayer suppressing Bless. I agree that higher level suppressing lower level...

    Prayer vs. Bless: What the...?

Yes, according to the spell description. I'm not sure if D&D Next differentiates between allies and enemies in the formal way that 4E does. None of the Effect blocks include "ally", "allies", "enemy" or "enemies" - they all target "creatures" (if a target description is required). There seems...

D&D 5E (2014) Traditional or Historial Arms and Armor

For me, that's not the problem with weapons-versus-armour tables. We could go back to the original meaning of "class" in "armor class", and describe all armoured protections that way. RoleMaster did this for example, and all it involves is taking a different view of what the number on the stat...

    Prayer vs. Bless: What the...?

From the very general angle of "they are spells that improve allies", they would be stacking. Also from the angle of "they are spells that provide general divine support for allies during combat". I'd quite happily play with buff effects broadly categorised into e.g. "Morale", "Divine"...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

Actually in some situations successes can add up over multiple checks. So 2 dice can be just half the speed of 4 dice (provided nothing is taking your successes away). I'm not sure whether a GM would allow this to happen with picking a lock without some kind of difficulty penalty on retries...

    D&D 5E (2014) You can't necessarily go back

This. The Craft Wand feat is in the first PHB, alongside all the other materials and rules necessary to easily create a variety of simple, quick and cheap character-boosting items (first level wands take a day to create, and cost 750gp, 30xp). The rule books are practically inviting...

    Trouble responding to playtest surveys

Actually that doesn't look like your anti-virus, but perhaps a combination of the email format used for the survey and your email client. Could you post a link from the email (not the survey link, or anything personal to you such as the cleaner email) - perhaps the link to WotC's home page? I...
