Heroes' Feast does say that it protects from magical fear, which refers to the Descriptor in the school entry of a spell. In the case of phantasmal killer, the descriptor is [Fear, Mind-Affecting]. Therefore, your character should have been immune to the killer.

There is one problem with a Sorceror becoming an Elemental Savant: you have to wait until 13th level to pick it up because the PrC requires 8 ranks in Knowledge (Planes), a cross-class skill for Sorcerors.

Before you can prepare the spell, you'll still have to research it... even if it is only a seed. It makes the calculations really easy, though, because you don't have actually figure out any of the DC modifiers.

Crothian is almost correct. Just add 10 to 1.5 * spell level and that gets the correct value (it accounts for the minimum int bonus)
