    When did 4d6-drop-lowest first appear?

A quiz: Initially D&D used 3d6-in-order to roll ability scores. Later it switched to 4d6-drop-lowest-any-order. To your recollection, when did that rule first appear in the D&D core rulebooks?

    (Rambling) Why 4e doesn't "feel" 1e...

I'm guessing you mean this mostly rhetorically. No, you don't. The recommended method is 4d6-drop-lowest-order-to-taste or some other even more advantageous system (1E DMG p. 11). The most common result is 13 (see 4d6 Probability Curve by Daniel R. Collins ). No, it doesn't. Sleep has no...

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

    I dare say it's twice as pertinent! Although 0 x 2 = 0.

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

Since you didn't address my primary concern in post #142 (or the other two questions), I'll assume that our interaction is done here.

Keep out of combat in D&D? Why?

He counted 8 "level-ups". The first level you get for free.

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

Are you asking me a question? Has this ever happened in your games? If I present what I would do in this hypothetical situation will you be satisfied, or will there be more scenarios I get quizzed on after that? I'll be frank: You pick on a lot of people with this nonstop Socratic grilling. If...

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

Yes. Thank you for the direct reply this time. Almost all the time I will choose (a). Presumably other members of the party tell Verys as soon as he wakes up, anyway. Anything else is too complicated to bother with, IMO. Which is just reiterating my prior post.

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

It does say that, right in the 3E PHB "Profession" entry (I quoted it earlier).

4E with 1E Feel: Does that appeal to you?

I can confirm this -- That's exactly how I've been playing lately, and for me, I'm happy to say it's the best-tasting D&D I've ever played. (Link below.)

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

No, I don't (which was precisely my point). Maybe you should present your recommended process instead of ridiculing mine.

    ^ Agree with above.

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

Personally, I would call that whole long situation a pretty big "pitfall" to my gaming enjoyment. I would much rather just collapse PC/player knowledge and avoid the whole debate in the first place. It's precisely those complicated (and OOC) in-vs-out of game debates that are the single biggest...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

This is the most perfectly disagreeable post I've ever seen at ENWorld. I am truly, mightily impressed that you've managed to craft a post wherein I disagree 100% with every single word. (Assuming it's not a spoof. I really thought it was to start with.)

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

Your limitation is very specifically the preferred play style for people I introduce 1E vs. 3E to for the first time. Or maybe I just play with geniuses (which is possible). :) But the other thing I see is that for new players (the older ones I introduce), a greater amount of technical lingo...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

That is an absolute requirement of any mechanical system I'd ever use. If you get some advantage, you have to pay for it. It's also more realistic: Medieval knights spent their whole life training to fight, they didn't stumble into it while working as brewers.

GMs - What kind of NPC level demographics work best?

Similar to the OP. Numerically it's about half as many NPCs per +2 level jump. Previously I took Gygax's 1E sources and interpolated the overall NPC distribution, that's written up here (XLS spreadsheets at bottom): AD&D Class/Level Demographics by Daniel R. Collins

4E with 1E Feel: Does that appeal to you?

Wow KM, that is the best sales pitch for any gaming book I've ever read. Makes me want to go out and find a copy right now. Separately: 4E mechanics and licensing ain't for me, regardless of any supplements.

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

And yet somehow you missed the 2nd part in (3.5 SRD): "Try Again: Varies. An attempt to use a Profession skill to earn an income cannot be retried... An attempt to accomplish some specific task can usually be retried." So it looks like you're not going to admit that your snide comments are in...

    Stop being so paranoid

Yes, there is a decision to be made with consequences. It's like in poker, when you have a choice to bet (and maybe lose that money) or fold (and lose the money you already put in). That's what makes it a game.
