Another Grognard Reviews 4e based on KotS

What Dacileva said is quite good. I would also add: 1) "Rounding error." Its a way to approximate facing or attention with substantially less homework to do. You sacrifice some possibilities for playability, in the same way that we don't have the possibility of heroes going down in one shot...

Humans as monsters - many varieties needed

I really want nation or region specific human monsters for the campaign settings. Hopefully each one will get an MM-like entry in campaign guides, e.g., the Corymr entry includes purple dragons and royal wizards and such.

Well played, Family. Though hopefully 4e will have a SFX budget closer to T2 than SCC.

Another Grognard Reviews 4e based on KotS

Candid and balanced. This is the only part I really disagree with. I look at marking simply as a simplified way to handle facing--if I'm pressing at you with my sword, you're less able to focus on other opponents. And, at least for me, I can finally see running a Conan type game with 4e...

    Dragonstar 4e

Midnight also played alright at low levels; sort of like core 3e that way. Dragonstar... *shuddders*

Yet another look at KotSF/4th Ed.

    You know, the royal "we."

Drinking a potion is a minor action?

If you conceive of minor actions as actions you can perform during, say, a move action, they become more verisimilitudinous.

Tiefling Warlord for KotS + Extra Skill Challenge

Man, I made a nearly identical character a few days ago playing around, only he was an eladrin with commander's strike ('port into flanking, let the rogue sneak attack with a +4 bonus to hit). But also with correct stats. :P

    Adventure: Treasure of Talon Pass?

Are those the extended FOTR and ROTK next to his headphones? And here I thought academia was the best gig on the planet.

    Zombie Minions are too weak

They also have an extra vulnerability to turn undead. Numbers definitely seem off.

    Minions and fixed damage

I find it strange that people can accept the existence of redshirts but not that redshirts don't crit. You've already given up symmetry with the first step. I'm pro fixed damage. But I don't buy the argument that large numbers of minions might get too swingy. Everything I know about statistics...

    A Little Perspective

But all you've found is flavor text. 4e actually has a mechanical difference: healing. It doesn't take you weeks of rest to recover from dodging blows. If most hit points aren't wounds, then I shouldn't need a cleric. 4e makes that real, rather than mere rationalizing rhetoric, by allowing...

    Tidbits from PHB Viewing

I hope Lolth and Gruumsh are demons, not gods. Edit: Nevermind, says Gruumsh is a god in the orc MM entry.

    Striker, Defender, Leader, Controller Dynamic

They key benefit would seem to be the constraints roles place on designers. They're forced to adapt the classes to a role, so if they can avoid "hybrid" silliness that should help game balance and ensure niche protection. Whatever its other flaws, shoehorning is good for balance. Hopefully they...

D&D 4E 4E PHB Viewing at Games Plus, what we saw

The absence of evil gods makes some good sense. The gods might be capricious, like the Greek Gods, but they are worshipped far and wide. And they can now be worshipped as a pantheon. It's ok for there to be oppositional dynamics among teh gods, but those make much more sense with yin and yang...

Poll: Magic item boosters or not?

Depends on the game. For a classic fantasy game, I would have some mix of built in bonuses or items that get more powerful. Each character would only have a few items- probably 1 major and 1 minor per tier. For Eberron, I'd go all out, and probably increase the price PC's can get from other...
