Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

Which is weird because the metal armours and weapons were definitely early iron -- especially the two-handed swords. Luckily, I believe you because otherwise I'd have to dig through boxes of unsorted RPGs to locate my copy.

On Magic Users and Darts: What's Up With That?

We started with darts in the late 1970's. I ran 1e throughout the 1980's along side other systems. I'd say about 20-30% of single-classed Magic-Users went with darts. Additionally, once one M-U got established using darts, new M-Us started to take them preferentially.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you like dungeon crawls?

I like running dungeon crawls because the territory is heavily curated. Wherever the group is, there is a limited set of options where they can travel. Contrast this with a city adventure. I like playing in dungeon crawls more in systems with long-term resource constraints. Where the...

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

RQ II and III were early iron age fantasy. It strongly depends on what you mean by bronze age fantasy. GURPS and Hero (both properly limited) do a great job. I suspect a Dungeonworld variant would be fantastic at it. The One Ring would also be a system I'd consider.

On Magic Users and Darts: What's Up With That?

One of the first campaign I ran with any success (~1981) at first level, the M-U had 4 times the hit points of the front line paladin!

    Star Trek Picard SPOILERS thread

In Enterprise, when Archer first runs into them, they are a centuries-old warrior culture known as raiders. In Discovery, Vulcan had contact with Klingons and skirmished enough to develop the "Vulcan hello" (i.e. shoot on sight) as a tradition. Klingons have had an empire since about 900 AD...

    Star Trek Picard SPOILERS thread

They've stunted since though. It's like a nation that developed cars 100 years ago and still uses Ford Model-A designs. During the TOS and TNG runs, they were presented as contemporary civilizations so having the similar power, transport, and combat systems made sense. Now that they are more...

On Magic Users and Darts: What's Up With That?

Daggers can be thrown. The OP specifically mentions this. You could throw up to 2 daggers a round. Daggers do very slightly more damage (an expected extra 0.5 hp on a hit), are heavier, and only have 66% the fire rate. Darts are a decent choice. All three weapons have tradeoffs.

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

I agree! The free-form attributes are a wonderful thing. I like FATE games though truth be told I've used and will likely to continue to use older variations more frequently than newer. I own Dresden Files, but the only games I've run and played in are based on Strands of FATE. I prefer...

On Magic Users and Darts: What's Up With That?

They are objectively a terrible fit for the rest of the combat system. Almost completely unaffected by character level, removing randomness in initiative in almost all cases, favouring Dex attackers dramatically: with damage that is way too good (pummeling) / too bad (grappling and overbearing)...

On Magic Users and Darts: What's Up With That?

in 1e, the big advantage of darts is the multiple attempts to strike. Since M-U's have a terrible attack matrix (truthfully it's not much worse at 1st level than anyone else, but it is pretty terrible by 5th), gaining extra rolls is very valuable to eke out some damage. That said, having some...

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

The aspect could be something like "Likes glittery things", too. Or the character is a hypocrite.

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

In FATE, the player and the character motivations can end up at odds ("I'd never steal! But my player thinks taking the chip is a better choice and is willing to insert a narrative complication here and now so I guess I will". The player has complete control over the character actions, but the...

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

Kult first edition has the tag line "Death is only the beginning" on the cover. That intrigued me so I picked it up to see how the game handled the transition through death and how they balanced/changed things for those who died and those who hadn't. I read the book through and then went back...

Why Do You Hate An RPG System?

Yes, it is a visceral feeling. One that need not be acted upon, but is there nonetheless. I hate lots of things: "wet" foods like soups and stews, certain singers like Kate Bush that literally cause me pain on high notes, and yes, some books full of words that are the antithesis of my...
