After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

Yeah, but if you are always finding gold, what's to look forward to? In my games, players get the excitement that should come from finding golden doubloons when they find platinum pieces or gemstones. If you want the players to react to gold as if it is valuable, you have to add some rarity...

People have the strangest deal makers

So we've got a thread on people's specific deal breakers that would keep them from joining 5e. The poison pill which would keep them away. How about a more positive thread? What is one rule that you'd like so much that you'd be willing to put up with a whole bunch of bad ones, and would make...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

I read that D&D 5e is switching to the silver standard. I've been waiting for that for... 17 years now. Oh yeah, I'm all in now. I don't care if there is a rule that I have to fly down to Seattle and kiss the 5e design team on the mouth to level up. We got the silver standard! WOOT...

Skills - what is your preference

I generally think rule for specific skills generally tend to discourage players to try to solve puzzles. If you link non-combat actions to skills, you generally get these problems: 1) People don't attempt something unless their skills are maxed, so attempts to think outside the box are...

    Character Building (from DDXP info)

I love my 4e themes. I fell in love with one when I made up a new assassin in 4e and saw the "Seer" theme. Making a gypsy assassin with clairavoyance could have been done with multiclassing, but I didn't want to take levels in wizard simply to represent innate gifts of foresight, or...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

To allow people to DM's to hit players, while still allowing a way to reduce damage of course. This is the thread for "healing reform". Missing all the time gets very frustrating if you are a DM and your powerful monsters miss all the time and look pathetic.

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

I would be just as satisfied if the way martial classes were viable was by avoiding damage. The thing about needing clerics in D&D was that fighters and rogues have generally not been able to avoid getting hit. If an all martial party is viable because they reduce the amount of damage they...

    Damage Equivalence

Btw, I'm surprised you gave up a long-running 4e campaign just over that. You would have had to have been at least 10th level to run into blinding+stunning effects in the same attack. Plus, there is no such thing as "3 rounds". It's always either (save ends) or until the end of the attacker's...

    Damage Equivalence

You're not going to get away from that by fleeing to 3e. That's a word for word description of the 1st level "colour spray" spell. Which is way, way too powerful to be there.

    Damage Equivalence

I might disagree that damage might not be the best metric, but there definately needs to be some reorganization of spells. Playing 3e a short time after playing 4e was a revelation. 4e taught me that any spell that took away actions from your enemies was the best spell you can cast, and there...

D&D 4E What do you like about 4e healing?

I don't know about that. My wife really enjoyed playing our 4e pacifist healer. She said, "I don't care if it is healing or damage, I just want to roll high numbers!"

D&D 5E (2014) So why are you buying 5th edition?

As I said, "my experience with".

    People have the strangest deal-breakers

Most people I game with have played MMOs, found them wanting, but still play them.

    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

Oh, you won't get an argument from me on alignment restrictions. I generally think alignments generally are a detriment to roleplaying. If it was more of a way of grouping like minded monsters together rather than a PC defining trait, I'd probably like alignment more.

    People have the strangest deal-breakers

I'm willing to say that most D&D players play MMO's. I don't mind you (I hate fetch/kill 10 of quests), but pretty much everyone I know does.

    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

Though I think if you're trying to play a good-aligned assassin, you very quickly shift to an evil alignment, so the problem takes care of itself. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) So why are you buying 5th edition?

Eh... my experience lurking in places like dragonsfoot and OSR blogs is somewhat different than that. Even the OSR people lurking around the 5e forums seem to be largely saying "no" to new ideas, and asking for old stuff to be ressurected, rather than proposing new ideas. I do see new ideas...

Reprints: What Else Do You Want?

Probably the D&D Rules Cyclopedia most of all. Even a copy in poor condition is expensive these days.

    Elminster's Forgotten Realms

My theory is that it will be Ed Greenwood's problem to fix, and that he will take the changes of the 4e realms and put his own spin on it. When Dragonlance was handed over to Margaret Weis and some ascended fans turned designers, that seemed to work very well. Not always the best mechanics...

D&D 5E (2014) When do you think 5E will come out?

My prediction is that the playtest will start in June, and the game will be released August 2013. If they are smart, they will start releasing 5e content in DDI (particularly adventures) to go along with the playtest rules, to try to get as many people signed up as possible while they wait for...
