Huh, that's an interesting idea. Wouldn't you still run into the problem of 3.0 being mathematically built for characters to have +X weapons at level Y? I kind of want the earlier simplicity where even <i>finding</i> a magic item was a big deal. It wasn't "oh, another +2 sword...let's sell...

Is Basic Fantasy compatible with old D&D products? I don't plan on dropping tons of cash on this, but I would love to have the cross-compatibility (given the sheer number of books, monsters, modules, etc.).

See, I really don't think they will do anything. Do I think they care? I think that some of the individual people there do, but not WotC as a whole/entity. They can't even bother to respond to their own forums, and you think they'll respond to a bunch of random e-mails? Not likely.
